Some of those Texas towers have to be seen to be believed in terms of height but also with respect to their distance, or lack of it, from runway extended centerlines - at least at regional fields.

Some of those Texas towers have to be seen to be believed in terms of height

Remember VHF is line of sight. When you have 97,000 sq km of billiard table, you got to do something to get your signal out.

Flew down to Senior Road antenna farm as pax in a chopper at 1500' agl. We had to remind the pilot that there was still considerable iron in the atmosphere at that height.

After an excellent landing etc...
