Light plane crash in Texas

Small plane crashes into two houses in Dallas

(CNN) --A single-engine plane crashed Thursday into two houses in Dallas, engulfing them in flames, officials said.

"It seems as if there are no survivors in the aircraft," said Lt. Joel Lavender of Dallas Fire and Rescue, who added that no one on the ground appeared to have been hurt. "We're very fortunate ... that this occurred in such a very small residential neighborhood."

Lavender said it was not clear how many people were aboard the aircraft, which he described as "Cessna-sized." Witnesses said the plane came "almost straight down" into the homes, he said.

The single-engine plane had taken off from Dallas-Addison Airport and went down about three miles south of the airport, said FAA spokesman Wayne Beckman.

Witnesses reported the plane crash to authorities shortly after 10 a.m. (11 a.m. EST) in a neighborhood near the city's main airport, Love Field, said another Dallas Fire and Rescue official, Lt. Doug Teubner.

"Both houses were burning real good when we arrived," Teubner said. "They [witnesses] described a loud whoosh and a ball of fire."

Video near the scene of the crash showed foggy and rainy conditions, although it was not clear if weather was a factor.
