I left Highland fourteen months ago from the Fisheries but for a very particular reason. I have three young children and no-one was going to give me back the time I was spending away from them.

I WAS sad to leave; great flying, great people (apart from Navoff who led me astray) and a terrific introduction to what is, lets face it, a fairly brutal industry.

Sure, things went wrong and people fell out and some felt they were hard done by at times. The truth is, go anywhere, you'll find the same. Highland is no worse or any better than most of the others. If you're after gold plated Ts & Cs then go elsewhere. If its a challenge and a bit of excitement you're after then Highland's for you.

The bottom line is, if you're thinking of starting or continuing your career at Highland, you could do A LOT worse. And the experience you will gain there will stand you in good stead for whatever you wish to do after.

I was offered a job at Highland about a year ago (after being interviewed 6 months before) but by then I had gone off to jetland. Personally I thought that either the J31 or the Fisheries would have been an awesome job. You would be based in one of the most stunning parts of the UK and do real flying to some awesome airfields. When I did a bit of instructing up at INV I heard all the usual horror stories but experience since has taught me that all companies have similar problems. Some people love their job some people spend all day winging about it. People do have a tendency to read and sign a contract then down the line start complaining about it it's human nature. I am one of those people with a long enough memory to remember being a penniless FI wondering how I was going to pay my bills and that keeps my morale sky high on the bad days. The Highland job would be awesome, take it if offered and if you don't like it a year or two down the line then leave.

I must say this thread has descended quickly ! A guy has just posted & asked a genuine question about a company which seems to have ended up a slanging match with everybody jumping on a band wagon. This is a trend with prune lately which seems to be gathering momentum.

Son of a beech for what it is worth when I flew the kingairs in Scotland for Gama a couple of years ago we would cross these guys on a regular basis & all of them were/are a very friendly bunch, it is great flying in a good part of the UK to live. Dont have too much info about the company but all the guys I talked too @ the time spoke highly of it.
Everybody comes on here & offers his/her opinion, why don't you just apply for the job (or just turn up) & see what is being offered???It is like any job, you do not know until the contract is in front of you.
Then you can make a formed decision, from past experience the last thing I would do is come on here seeking advice about a company, or job why? As Clint once said opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one!!

I don't work for Highland, but bump into their pilots in Inverness, Kirkwall and Shetland. I can vouch for the fact that they are a good bunch of blokes (never came accross any chapesses yet:{), and from the outside it seems there is a good ethic at the company.

Also, when grounded due weather they happily offer us a cup of tea, thanks guys!

I add this for what it is worth, and to balance some of the negative, which doesn't seem apparent to me.

Well Mike I can happily confirm there's more than one chapess flying for Highland, Mrs SkyToddler clearly being the outstanding candidate among them all.

Sadly you may have missed your opportunity to admire her from a distance, as she is temporarily absent from the Jetstream roster due to Skytoddler Junior's imminent arrival :)

None are owned by Highland, all are third party. In for maintenance/storage
and occasionally used by Highland if their own a/c are tech or in insufficient numbers for commitments.
Rumour has it at least one may be going soon, to somewhere hot sandy and dangerous. Not Barra!

That explains it then. I flew into INV the other day and saw them. I thought maybe problems at Highland but obviously im wrong. I was reckoning that being a reason why they never reply to any cv's I send them! Or perhaps its just me they dont like:}!!

Some of you are a real bunch of silly nagging nannies. There are many flying jobs available so why not go for the cushy one? BUT in a lot of cases you'll need to get into the rough of things and tough it out sometimes, certainly when you're looking for HOURS! (free of charge, of course, with pay)
Ever try flying up north in the deepfreeze? Freeze your nuts off? You bet ye! would think you're finished?
Get with it guys and take it as it comes, like a man! In time and careful attention to improvement in skills and contacts you'll make it!

Problem with this bunch.

Two hours north of Marks and Spencer ( sorry pal, that`s a well known department store in the UK ) and they look to have their passports stamped.
A couple of years ago our licencing authority insisted that flying experience was not a factor in licence issue, 250hrs would do.

Sometime about 2011 check the tyre wear for these super stars.

Meanwhile, we have thick f/o`s claiming stardom whilst modelling the latest in shiny clothes for their mates approval.

Quite depressing really.

I started in the mean while in a norwegian company called Helitrans. They are looking for more Jetstream typerated pilots.
