flyglobespan let pilots go
Latest news flyglobespan has let lots of its contractors go and some paye with one months notice. They say its because the winter is quite. Nice people working for the airline but i wouldnt touch this airline as they cannot be trusted in keeping promisies that were never kept.
|
Thats a real shame to see this happen.Having worked with Globespan in the past i found them a great bunch of people.I hope these issues are resolved quickly.Good luck folks.
|
When was this announced Oskar? Today? Are they many more to go?
|
as far as i know most were and will be told over the next couple of days, You are correct its a real shame some good people in the company and if this is how they treat there hardworking staff they deserve not to have them including the cabin staff. I dont think the contract company dealing with the lay offs has shined themselves in glory either, left a lot of people hanging on over the last month or two. I will let you guess who they are. Good luck to all those still in there, hope it works out.
|
Dai Chon Doi is correct, all Glasgow and Edinburgh contract Captains will be kept on with a few F.O's on reduced salary over the winter.
|
the deal some guys have been offered is half salary for three months but they do not get a penny until they rejoin in march if guys are happy not getting paid during winter so be it. the issue is that when guys are given 12 month contracts a few months ago and then let go, thats wrong. If anyone heard of a better deal please post them on this site.
|
There are a load of 73 jobs going world-wide at them moment. Especially in the far east. Might be good for a few months. Winter in Malaysia and back to Scotland in April.
Not exactly a great advert for GSM though is it? |
S a s,
Why doesn't it look good for GSM? I think seasonal rationalisation is an ideal strategy for a Lo-cost operator. But feel free to keep up your 'GSM bashing' if you wish. :ok: |
I'm not bashing GSM, but the current problems don't look good if you are a prospective employee.
They have had problems keeping experienced crews. Getting rid of contractors over the winter period won't exactly help matters. I'm seeing this as an outside person with no agenda. I've always thought that GSM were a good company and really good for the industry. I'm not so sure now. Losing approvals and then making pilots semi-redundant isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. |
I've spoken to a pal of mine who is both angry and philisophical about the whole thing (If that's possible).
He's been offered half salary for Dec, Jan and Feb with a view to returning in March. However, this money will not be paid until his return, Globespan want him to be on a 10 day standby over this period, and he IS NOT to do any other flying unless he has the written permission of the company. Half the wages (unpaid for three months) and an inability to do work elsewhere to make up the salary differance is pretty un-reasonable in his view. It's this bit that has made him angry. If I were in his shoes I'd be feeling a bit p!ssed off at that clause in the contract too. Reading between the lines, it would appear GSM have taken a hit and expect a quiet winter. They know they need crews for the summer and are trying to procure them early. But I feel they're going the wrong way around it. If I were GSM management I'd think long and hard about potentially restricting the amount of flying a guy can do when you've just effectively offered that guy a 50% pay cut. Who would sign up for that? Who can AFFORD to sign up for that with Xmas just around the corner? |
Why don't we admit it Gentlemen, this airline is corrupt and bankrupt, both in cashflow and ethics, the sooner it admits defeat and goes under the sooner the fools clinging to the dream of working for a jet operator might see the light and actually find a real one!
I am fed up with reading how 'wonderful the people are'. They are wonderful in any company that someone is crapping on because common adversity always brings out a team spirit. What do you think the management trade on in such times for Gods sake! Wake up, your company is all but gone. Get your CV's out to real jet operators and save your arses while you can. |
I don’t know what the big deal is, many companies lay off contractors in the winter, ok, I know Flyglobespan has not had the best summer season, but I think they can overcome this difficult period. I think just about every low cost carrier has had difficult times at some stage or another.
Ella, there are many good people at Flyglobespan, not only are your comments derogatory they are libellous, and as for the ‘fools clinging onto their jobs’ you should show a little bit more compassion, they are good people trying to pay mortgages and support families. I think you need to grow up a bit! |
supergimp you mention that most companies let contractors go, do most companies give there staff a 12 month contract and then let them go a few months into that contract, that has been the case for a lot of guys. If you are happy with that, thats your opionion, this is is not a bash at the good people working there, this is factual information.

GSM hardly unique here
Just read on another thread running alongside this one that BMI are currently making similar moves
The airline seems to have been overcrewed as winter approaches and expansion plans have been put on hold. Numbers that they had previously anticipated needing are no longer required. People that have been offered contracts are now surplus to requirements. Crew have been offered unpaid leave. Just poiniting out GSM are not a unique case; however a lot of people on here want them torched for their actions. I will agree, I'm sure it's not a nice situation to be in, however airlines are businesses and business is a very fickle world indeed. |
Oskar,
The answer is yes! I can absolutely empathize with the contractors that have been let go, it must be a very difficult position that they have been left in, however, as unethical as it may be the agencies are not breaking any rules, I know, I am a contractor and in my contract it says they can let me go with one months notice, however far into the contract I am. It is the risk that all contractors face, that’s why they receive more money. |
re BMI
"Just read on another thread running alongside this one that BMI are currently making similar moves"
Not quite the same as there are no contract workers in the mainline Pilot workforce (can't speak for baby or regional), so while they have been looking for volunteers for unpaid winter leave they are not forcing anyone out, just don't expect an interview too soon. |
Likewise at bmibaby,
Despite expected transfer of 6 FOs to Mainline being halted, last intake of new FOs was not cancelled. We are fortunate to have a CP who realises the value of goodwill and sees beyond the short term. |
Say again s l o w l y ............
you mention work in Malaysia , can you confirm if true and who to contact ? thanks |
Call Ryanair at East Mids, they will welcome any experianced NG drivers with open arms.
I am very sorry to be leaving globespan. If anyone from Icelandair reads this thanks for the 2 heaps of scrap you sent us over the summer. Icelandic........in true form the bottom feeders of aviation. |
LAX,
Again, Icelandair has NOTHING to do with this, they never lost their ETOPS and are a very professional airline. I strongly suggest you to withdraw your post as Icelandair has tens of years experience in Oceanic flights, they do nothing else. We are recruiting, but with such an attitude, I can't recommend you. A pity as my current airline has far more attractive conditions than FR ever will. |
Whilst the management have to take it on the chin for many issues, I strongly suggest that my comments are representitive. I am not talking about gsm's loss of ETOPs. Icelandairs performance has been shocking this summer:eek: and has compromised globespan financially and in reputation. Do a search on the internet!
I dont want you to recommend me i have a job which suits me. |
Despegue, as ever, you have demonstrated a complete inability to understand more than one bit of information at a time without getting the information completely ****ed up in your own anglo-phobic mind.
Icelandair's efforts pertaining to our operations are completely relevant in this matter. They may not be the root cause of problems, but they certainly haven't done anyone any favours. And judging by the attitude of a couple of their fligthcrew when dealing with a much simpler matter, I am not overly surprised. |
Letting pilots go or is it?
Now then now then lets not drop into this again.
My question would be why would a post like this be about the company letting pilots go when a generic job search site and some other not so good ones states that the company have begun interviewing for people over the last few days. Have I missed something? |
Not really. They did let a load of contractors go and are now hiring again.
This was done for financial reasons and has annoyed a fair few people, but it probably was necessary. Hopefully all the "problems" that people have seemed to enjoy jumping on in here are a thing of the past and GSM can get back to being the great little company it once was for both staff and customers. |
Could not agree more.
It would be nice for this to happen before all the recent(ish) joiners who have seen the changing times leave before really seeing what the company may be like and could become. |
Here we go again, the GSM bashers DO NOT have any current s**t to throw at GSM so they dig up a story nearly 2 months old and "Shock! Horror!" The s**t in question is nothing more than rationalisation when things were looking tough for GSM but now that GSM is slowly emerging out of the other side of the gloom, the doom-mongers start sharpening their scythes. Pathetic, totally pathetic.
I've been here for over a year and I love it, wild horses wouldn't drag me away. A couple of guys who left to try pastures new are now trying to get back into GSM. About a dozen new F/O's joining on the B767 fleet in Dec & Jan. Now, Shi**tirrers and GSM knockers, does THAT sound like a crap company going downhill? What really worries me is that a colleague PM'd me that his contributions weren't making it onto the forum because he was to pro-GSM and when he complained about this overly biased censorship he was PM'd "..we'll edit how and what we like.Tough." Now THAT is worrying. |
Correct me if I am wrong but I was just saying that I hope people can see what the company was really like(ie coming out of its slightly awkward times) before deciding to look elsewhere. That does not mean that there is a flow of people out the door it also does not mean that everyone is looking elsewhere, but is an observation based on fact and knowledge. I like gsm and believe it could be a very good place again in the near future.
I am not dragging up old threads and am not sharpening anything with a pointy end and as for being pathetic with such an over re-action to a positive hmmm! I agreed with say again slowly and so if you would like to find a none existent negative in here go ahead I wondered why I just watched and didint post |
Don't worry, folks.
A couple more posts (which revived this discussion after a 6week hiatus) have been deleted. Those posts were made in response to the other thread getting closed, but were more aimed at me, than GSM, or any real discussion. I'll say openly- I got a little heated (for which I reservedly apologise) when a couple of simple factual posts by me went missing/were deleted, while some other questionable posts were kept inplace. To get the discussion back on topic. Flyglobespan have apparently carried out some interviews for flightcrew. I have no significant details. Operational changes have been made, which seem to be bearing fruit. The company appears to be getting through a period of consolidation, and the future looks better for all of us here, and further recruitment. |
There is a great deal of satisfaction to be had when you help contribute to a company getting back on its feet. One of the best times that I ever had was working with a group of motivated individulas who were determined to turn things around after a difficult period post a major organisational change. It was hard work and involved a lot of blood, sweat and tantrums; but I learned a hell of a lot from it and formed a number of strong relationships during that time. A good number of my colleagues turned their back on things when the going got tough, and to be honest that was the hardest thing to take; to see others leave and then badmouth the company. Funny thing was, a great deal of these people soon realised that the grass wasn't all that greener where they ended up. Usually never is in my experience.
Maybe parallels can be made with GSM? That would be great to see. |
slightly off track.
My professional life, engineering or aviation, has generally been involved with the less established, developing projects and companies. It appeals to who I am. It won't appeal to others though. The outcome can be very satisfying, but requires a huge amount of determination and a long view. It's along the lines creating or using. Some people would prefer to work for an established and stabilised operation with a long track record. Many people expect that to be the norm wherever they go. |
A question for the Mod's.
Instead of deleting factual, non derogatory, non inflammatory posts then why don't you just delete the thread? At least it won't make you look like a bunch of corrupt control freaks.
