What are BMI really like to work for?
 

Guys/girls this may be the wrong site but would be grateful for info on BMI with view to a career-currently on the 400 with an Aian carrier with 5000 hours.Thanks in anticipaion

bmi have the same problems as many other airlines. If you want massive roster disruption, unstable lifestyle and poor leadership then don't hesitate, join up now.

Worked for an airline that is a lot worse!

JumboJon, on the 737 fleet I'm not doing a lot of work, plenty time off, pays good (but allowances need an overhall) and great people to work with.

Even binned my BA application form :) :eek:

You are right of course, a great company to work for. I guess that's why some are leaving to BA and that place in Saudi. Even had some recently off the long haul fleet - must be a GREAT airline to work for. You assume too much - the aviation business is a small one - I might not work for the same bmi.

People will go to BA because it's BA, irrespective of conditions at bmi. The Roster disruption is nowhere near as bad as you make out, and the lifestyle can be stabilised by judicious use of Block Windows.

Apart from the perennial whingers (not pointing a finger anywhere, of course) there's a pretty good bunch of people to work with, reasonable money and good route variety if you're on the right fleet (the one from Seattle, that is!).

I side with chalky on this one.

Is there any benefit to going from bmi to BA? None that I can see.

After having looked at the pension (not much better than ours) the money only gets good when you go long haul. Very impersonal way of life. Type frozen for 4 years, pay frozen for the same length of time. Nah flappless, you're welcome to BA :p ;)

And if BA is the paradise you imply then why are BA pilots leaving for other companies abroad??

Roster stability is good, we get what 5 weeks notice last time? Last summer was bad and that issue still hasn't been addressed but things at the moment are pretty good.

People leave but it's not necessarily for the reasons you state. Various people have handed in there notice and have rescinded at the last moment.

I still state I'm as happy as a pig in !!!!! working for bmi :D :D Things aren't perfect but I never expect them to be.

Here on the 146 it depenends on where you are based. Man get bored with Man-Muc only.
Bhx are messed about with airport standby and no strcuture at all to working life. Stn do most work and get most time away. New fleet manager isn't getting on with the troops in Ham. Pay now below standard FDP crap. Pilots need BALPA to get in with ABZ!

Ok Alterego, with respect that's a seperate thread as we're two different companies, bmi & bmi regional! I am assuming you work for regional?

Surely lifestyle is de-stabilised for those who do not 'block window' by those who abuse it. It is a sad state of affairs when your roster is considered to be stabilised by de-stabilising others ! Even if it is 'judicious' use ! Your roster should be stabilised by the company - not by you.

I know there's no such thing as a typical roster but approx. how many nights away in a month with BMI mainline. I've heard there are quite a few duties involving up to four nights away in a row...is this the case?

It depends. You are allowed to express a preference for more or less nightstops, and this preference is supposed to be taken into account when your roster is written.

Flappless will say it doesn't work, but it does for me, broadly speaking. As a "min nightstopper" I get maybe one a week. Other people opt for "max 3" or "max 4" which indicates they want to be away for 3 or 4 nights in a row.

People have been taken on with less than 1500 hrs, ex-Oxford, but it probably depends on how desperate they are at any point in time (no disrespect intended to Oxford Graduates!).
