"recruitment freeze in all departments" "further expansion unlikely" "any pilot intoduction limited at best"

These phrases and others used. :(

Toddy was just about to drop you a line! Good shout! Lets do Chester, fit birds apparently! ha ha!

Keeping a lid on costs!

I second Kempus....recently asked for a friend and was told in no uncertain terms that there is very little chance. This, despite bmi losing '2-3' pilots/month! - the primary concern at the moment is to try to keep a lid on costs -all costs.

You may be aware that today SilverJet has also recently gone to the wall [Very Sad] but it will of course release a small number of pilots with many hours on jet -btw Silverjet won't be the last to go.....

For those in the hold pool...some advice:

1) Keep everything up to date -as things can and do change at bmi at v short notice.

2) Don't hold your breath - thats not meant to be taking the mick - try EZY, Jet2 etc. - but if you have lower hours try to get any flying job eg. jump schools, instructing, Eastern - Flybe -Loganair [don't be so stubborn that you will only fly a 'Jet'.

If you can politely knock on the door or arrange an introduction that is often good - if not then every couple of months remind them you are still alive. I recently met a new FO for whom bmi is his first job who said that he had been waiting in the hold pool for a while - but had turned down another prop job in the mean time.....IMHO that is foolish....but he was lucky.

You may choose to ignore this advice or think that it does not apply to you .....but just to remind everyone currently WITHOUT A FLYING JOB that the economy is not great, cash flow and savings for both individuals and companies is limited, revenues/profits are down and fuel is at at near $1400/tonne. So be prepared to be flexible [any base any aircraft any company] and importantly be ready to move fast if an opportunity does occur!
Good Luck to all.:ugh:

Foolish, very foolish - but like so many from the branded FTOs - only Boeing or Airbus will do.

Cloud Bunny 3rd June 2008 10:23

Is this recruitment freeze due solely to cost cutting and trying to survive through the current climate or is this with a view to preparing the company for takeover?

SinBin 3rd June 2008 16:23

Keeping costs to a min due increasing oil prices...........in a nutshell. Cheaper to buy days off than recruit.

CarltonBrowne the FO 23rd June 2008 18:01

As speedtouch says, keep everything current. Learning German might not be a bad move, either!;)

This is a mainline thread about the holdpool, suggest you try on a Regional thread.

Hi guys, I've recently (april) started at bmi after being in the hold pool since July last year. I know some of you guys in the pool so thought I would share a conversation I had with BB in the crewroom about two weeks ago. When I asked him about the holdpool he assured me it would remain in place due to the efforts taken to create it.
He recommended that in the current climate the best thing to do would be to have a job in the industry. Examples given were as cabin crew or dispatchers. The reason given was that when recruitment does start again then it usually takes place internally first and even if it doesn't then at least you hear about it first. Also the experience will serve you greatly when you are eventually sat on the right side of a closed flightdeck door.

Hope this info is of some use.

keepitlit 8th July 2008 18:57

As much as you are trying to help, I wouldnt take this advice, I would look to maintaining flying skills like being an instructor or Aerial photography, I have seen this route taken before with little/no success, flying is the name of the game (not being flown) even if you have to do it for very little or free until you get a break.

Oh and it hasnt happened too often in bmi

Hey guys how the swimming going??

Any Thoughts?

Branson predicts "Spectacular Casualties in the Airline Industry"
Virgin boss Sir RB predicts a high profile casualty in the US......any takers??? And what future for big players in Europe with this 'perfect storm' scenario quoted in his article?

LONDON (Reuters) - There will be "spectacular casualties" in the
airline industry over the next 12 months, billionaire Richard Branson, the owner of Britain's No. 2 long-haul airline Virgin Atlantic, was quoted as saying on Saturday.

http://row.bc.yahoo.com/b?P=IxBFNlf4...829992%2fV%3d1
The U.S. airline industry -- including Virgin America -- has been battered by soaring fuel costs that are pinching even the healthiest airlines.
"The financial state of the world is just about the worst I've ever known it," Branson told The Times newspaper in an interview. "It's getting perilously close to being worse than the 1990s.
"You have the perfect storm -- you've not only got the banking crisis and the housing crisis, you've got the soaring fuel prices as well. One of the big American carriers will almost definitely go."
Branson confirmed Virgin was interested in buying British airline bmi, 50 percent plus one share owned by entrepreneur Sir Michael Bishop.
The carrier has long been expected to change ownership in 2009 due to a private agreement between Bishop and 30 percent minus one share co-owner Lufthansa.
Despite barely making a profit in 2007 -- and with the outlook far worse for 2008 -- bmi's value is in its control of 11 percent of the highly prized airline slots at Heathrow.
The billionaire also called for an end to BAA's monopoly of Britain's major airports.
Part of Spain's Ferrovial since 2006, BAA has owned the three main airports serving London -- Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted -- as well as Scotland's Edinburgh and Glasgow airports since it floated over 20 years ago.
"It's been embarrassing to be British looking at foreigners queuing up to come into the country," said Branson.
"I certainly think that BAA should be broken up. Each individual terminal at Heathrow should be privatised so they can compete against each other. BAA just creams off more and more every year."
Britain's Competition Commission is investigating whether problems faced by airline travellers through Britain, as highlighted by the chequered opening of Heathrow's Terminal 5, are caused or exacerbated by BAA's monopoly.

Know it's not the newest of info just thought i'd promote some further thought about it or other options. Will the saleout happen and will we have a chance to get a job first? Or after?

Count von Altibar 12th July 2008 21:51

Keepitlit is correct. Get a flying (piloting) job if you can and I wouldn't hang around waiting for bmi. Be proactive and seek any flying job you can grab, tough times are ahead for all airlines.

Kempus 13th July 2008 12:39

Last time I spoke to BB he was saying that it could be spring 09 before any movement.

Being in a hold pool does not make you an asset of the airline so if a buyout went ahead :ouch:

Grab any jobs that are going, there's a chance we'll see $200 a barrell before the end of the year and 500hrs experience is worth a hell of a lot more than none!
