Flightrider, you are absolutely right. I used to work for BCAL and in that company it was always regarded as essential to keep the flight deck and cabin crew together for their working day (on short haul) or for whatever period their long haul roster took. The flight deck would have it no other way and the cabin crew insisted on it. Operating a flight is a team work exercise and teams only work well together when they are actually together.

As I recall it one of the Kegworth problems was that flight deck and cabin crew in BD did not work to gether as well as they might. One of the problems seemed to be that crews stayed in different hotels.

Some years ago I was involved in some discussions with BA about providing software for crew rostering purposes. I was teamed up with a guy one was a foremost expert at that time in Artificial Intelligence which is at the heart of translating rules into practical rosters. His conclusion at that time was that the BA rules were then so complex as to make effective and efficient rostering impossible. As a result we abandoned any further discussions.

It is an issue that BA management have got to fight. I contend also that there is a safety issue in this. Do remember that a major contributor to the Staines crash in a BA Trident was pre flight stress levels amongst the crew.
