Interesting about all the leasing being mentioned. I'm aware of a few FR NGs being leased out to another operator with a few UK bases in <1 year.

400 is likely an overstatement... But in some bases the attrition rate is ~10%, so the real number wont be too far.
Mostly FOs moving to a better career in the various flag carriers currently recruiting (BA, IB ...), or headed to the sandpit (not as many as previous years), but many capts considering options as well... Cadet level has dropped underground, as they need everybody capable of pressing MCP buttons on the line. In any case, don't expect any improvement in conditions, that will never happen in FR, unless you consider them paying your TR and bonding you for a ~30k non-prorated after all penalties should you leave early an improvement. |
In every airline there is a calculation for losing crews per year.. Generally it is about 10%; consisting of leaving, retiring, illness, others. RYR = 300pa. Of course that is a mixture of ranks. In a LoCo's case the loss of F/O's is exacerbated. Many leave to better pastures; many are upgraded after a few years with less than traditional hours; a few illness. The exacerbation comes with the rapid expansion. You need commands for all the former reasons, plus the expansion, but the senior F/O guys are leaving. You need to replace them, make new captains and recruit new F/O's to crew the extra a/c arriving. However, without going to the other side of the world the choice at home is becoming wider and T's & C's plus home life are more important in career choices than just getting any job you can. In some companies it will take grounded a/c to change attitude. Share holders will see to that.

10% is only what I was told by a few airlines as their planning requirement. I'm only a messenger. Admittedly they were smaller airlines, up to 40 a/c, but % is %. 400 pilots losing 40 per year; doable. 4000 losing 400pa more difficult.

High fluctuation is not always the case. Right now it seems that we have again a short span of a "golden age" in aviation, means a lot of airlines are searching right now(apart from the usual China/ME which is not for everyone).
Of course pilots try to get themself into a good position for the next dry years to come. That's all. 10% is not a standard value constantly going over the last few years(and the next few) I am pretty sure. |
This show has just started take a seat and enjoy. But this people are so rude that are going to wait until they see the empire going down and the growth completely stopped.
