I also received the standard, "you're just one mark short," reply from Thompson three years ago. I called them & eventually got through to someone who was able to kindly provide some feedback. She told me that I had passed the maths tests but my verbal reasoning was weak: in sixth form I achieved a grade F for A' level maths but a grade A for my English Language A' level! :confused:

Counting up here: I know of ten other guys who have previously applied to Thompson, including two training captains who trained some of their crews in previous incarnations, with the likes of Maersk, & delivered some of their aircraft for them, who also went on to fail, "by just one mark." Two of the guys got through. There are many experienced crews who will not apply to Thompson because of their inappropriate selection process which is aimed, rightly or wrongly, totally at the wannabe section of our profession.

Dogma, if this is true then I think that the standard of your posts on this thread just about says it all, doesn't it?

I wouldnt bother wasting your time with a company that mucks you around like that to be honest, with all these psycho bable tests and nonsense. It proves zero as to whether your capable of flying a 737 or 757 or not! Hopefully companies will realise in the future that all these tests are, are recruitment HR gizmo tools, and they waste an incredible amount of money. Until then, as has been said, there are lots of other companies out there who measure flying ability!

The simple answer is that experienced pilots WILL not tolerate being used as pawns in some HR department game of twister,
They will not get down on hands and knees and play 'lego' to show team skills when they have been doing the job for a long time.
the problem with Britannia/tui/whatever the hell the next name is that they have always been viewed as an arrogant airline, the attitude has always been that they are cream of the charter industry....well, I will say their T+Cs are good but they fly the same aircraft as many other companies so big deal.

Ive said it before, If your not prepared to jump through the hoops, then dont. Its really as simple as that.

There is no point crying about it being unfair or bellowing and beating your chest that your too macho for 'those kind of games'.

Tfly I have a selection procedure, as Im sure do Astreaus, BA, etc. If you would like to change the selection procedure then please join and put forward your ideas. Of course, you will have to pass the current selection procedure first.

I've never said any company is better than any other, nor any selection procedure.

I personally believe that 'some' companies are worth 'playing the game' for.

If I had to undergo our selection test today, I would fail miserably. On the bright side, I would not have to endure the shambolic farce that defines a good deal of our operation these days.:ugh:

It may be that the selection process could give the prospective employee an insight into the managerial style of the company they are joining.

It may be coincidence but when we were good at what we did, we had good managers and a well-organised operation. The selection process was simple and relevant. These days it includes an interview with a physiologist and a whole raft of pointless exercises to be deemed potentially worthy to join our ranks. However, by a strange coincidence, we now need a checklist to scratch our arses and require so much irrelevant paperwork in our operation that a simple flight to PMI turns into a marathon.:*

The T’s & C’s may be good, but contrary to what they will tell you, that is despite our management.

Good luck with the job search people. Try not to take it personally. In addition, it’s likely that those that administer this process have never actually had to pass it themselves.

As for tired 'invective' this is a feeling that I have encountered frequently about the company,
Like I say..no axe to grind but other than T+Cs being good I can't see any reason why some in the company seem to consider themselves the 'chosen ones'.
However I am certain if you ask most companies the chief pilot would rather just go for an interview and sim ride rather than any gobbledy gook - It is clear Tfly must have a very active HR section who need to justify their existance.

For instance:
Large UK charter operator flying 757/767s........an interview
Tuifly " " " 757/767s........two interviews,maths test,english test,sim ride,used to be three days worth,

A drawn out selection procedure does not indicate a higher quality employer....do you see my point ?;)

Everyone knows Tfly's recruitment procedure. If you don't like it don't apply.If you don't work for the company what do you care who gets in? There are even old coffin dodgers bitching about what it was like in the 70's. Wierd.

Having Children who are or were Pilots,and friends in similar situations,it IS very interesting to find out whats going on in recruitment in 2007.My point was that the Airlines today tend NOT to want Aircraft Handlers(Not the Mangler version).They prefer systems operators and monitors,who wander through the check lists ,in ignorance is bliss!So therefore ,a good Ace Computer games Expert would do very well.Britannia used to have some of the best handling Pilots I had ever seen.Cool,Calm ,Collected who were well used to the 7 Ps.Nowadays no one has ever heard of these;for those not educated properly they stand for;Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Britannia had the Cream of 6 and 8 SOAF,under Robin R,and these guys got Commands very early .I wonder if they could get the same job today.However, the risk of another Kegworth has meant that all Pilots are tarred with the same brush,and Management Companies now vet everyone with trick cyclist tests etc.It is the world of Inshalla.
