It must be something cos I know rated -400 pilots who have all had about 5 months between interview and start date.

Is your rating P2X?

coded_messages 3rd Aug 2006 10:24

No I am not a Second Officer ;) Its all seat time!

Khaosai 3rd Aug 2006 12:01

People do actually leave Virgin for reasons other than events such as 9/11.

Most of the people i know who left did so as commuting became a pain.

Its a great company, with great people, but if you are planning on commuting then make sure you get on the Airbus as life will be easier than on the Boeing.

Rgds.

Thanks Scroggs and others,
In some way that is actually a consolation to me. It means i haven't been rejected and also that there is nothing i could be doing that i haven't already.
It also means that i will get on with my life and other applications, and if and when that great call arrives i will go for it then.

Virgin Recruitment

Can anyone tell me if Virgin Atl. are recruiting onto the 400? Presently I am operating the 400 for a S.E. Asian carrier... in Hong Kong ( ). Sick and tired of the BS that is embedded in the checking department and looking to use the bang seat and egress shortly :( . To whom do I mail the begging letter? Any input appreciated :ok:

Hiring at Virgin Atlantic from other Virgin Group Companies

If one works for another Virgin Group company and applies to Virgin Atlantic -- is it considered an "internal application" or is the applicant given preference over "from the street" hires?

Tandemrotor 7th Aug 2006 07:16

I've heard that anyone working for Virgin Records is a 'shoe in'!

VS salary

Hi there
What is salary for a new first officer in Virgin Atlantic ?
Regards Michael

QAR ASR 14th Sep 2006 04:49

A side more if you live tax free and commute in from France, Ireland etc.:p

Alpha_India 14th Sep 2006 07:43

Interesting point, QAR-- you will completely get away without paying ANY taxes in the aforementioned cases of commuting ? :}

Not quite: every amount of salary you claimed tax back on in the UK has to be decleared to the french tax man. French taxes are lower than the uk refund tough. I did some contract work for a UK company and the french taxman recently found out... The inspector, who I dealt with, told me I was not the only one he was after and a friend in EZY-Paris told me the french tax man is after them as well. So be carefull and seek advise of a professional!

So can anyone give an approx take home per month for a non-commuter for a new FO at Virgin ???

AFA 14th Sep 2006 13:07

About £3100ish perhaps after pension. Plus £500-600 in allowances which you'll spend if you're reasonably festive downroute.

scroggs 14th Sep 2006 17:08

Starting pay for a VS FO from January 2007 is £45,739. Profit-related additional pay, paid per flying hour, will add around £13,000 assuming the 750 hours contracted are flown This figure can go down as well as up! Pension contributions are paid on the total. Downroute subsistence allowances add approximately £5-600 per month tax-free. The effects of tax on the salary and additional figures are too individual to be generalised sensibly, especially if you are a commuter from another country.

The million dollar question and maybe it's been asked already as I havent read every page on this thread.......

When it comes to long haul, BA or Virgin ?

Is there anybody who has experience of both? And given the choice, who would people favour?

scroggs 18th Sep 2006 13:38

BA or Virgin, which is better?

Virgin F/Os

Is there such a thing?

Just a few questions to any Airbus Virgin F/Os out there.
1) What sort of routes do you do? Where are the regular destinations?
2) How many trips per month. Generally how long are they?
3) i.e. how much time at home per month on ave?
4) What's the starting salary, what can you expect to earn in allowances pa?
5) How does the rostering work - rolling six week roster?
6) Bones of the pension - money purchase? What do the company contribute?
7) What base could one expect for 340 or future 330?
8) Good bunch of guys? Happy company or company infighting ie BMI?

Any inside views greatly appreciated. If you feel some of the above is too sensitive for a public forum please pm me. Cheers all.

1, Look on the website for all the route info, NB Carribean is 747 only at the mo.
2, Average about 4 most from 3 to 5 days although Sydney is 9
3, Min 10 days off, usually about 14-16 not counting days when you leave late or arrive early
4, Basic £42k, plus £16.66 per block hour -contracted to 750p.a. so thats 12.5k plus subsistance allowance down route-usually paid in local currency cash-about £5k p.a.
5, Bids in by 18th of the month, roster out by 15th of the following month (often late), can bid for 2 trips, one trip and 3 days off or 6 days off. Rotating bid system so FNGs have a good chance every 3rd month.
6, Money purchase, Company will put in 15% if you put in >6%, less if <6%.
7, LHR for all A340 guys-what 330s?
8, I like it- and people seldom leave!!

This post gives the current (as of Jan 2007) starting pay for Virgin FOs. All the other questions have been answered many times in this thread.

Scroggs, if one signs on to work 850hrs (thats still an option right? or have i been misled?) how much extra is that? Just 16.66 X 100? or more?

Thanks:ok:

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want to come to Virgin - with all that that implies for lifestyle etc. - and then choose to work as hard as you would at BA or similar! However, it takes all sorts... As you can probably gather, I do not work extra hours! My contract says 750 hours, and that's what I work - the rest of my life is mine to do with as I choose. So I'm not the best person to ask.

That said, as far as I am aware the decision to apply to work more (or less) than the contracted 750 hours must be made before the start of the rostering year (July-June). What the remuneration is, I have no idea. If you get in to the airline, you'll have plenty of time to study the various pay agreements and protocols during your training and probationary phases.

Jetkopite:)

Yes, this would seem to be true. It would appear that the airline has decided that the cumulative delays to the A380 plus other economic signals suggest that it's a good time to slow down the previously rapid rate of expansion. The result is that the much-rumoured A330/350/787 buy has been postponed (if it ever actually existed!) and the deliveries of the remaining A340-600s will be slowed slightly. That leaves us very slightly overborne for pilots right now, and so new recruiting has been put on hold.

However, I would anticipate that those currently in the hold pool will remain there, and will be called forward in due course. All the A346 deliveries scheduled for next year are additional to the fleet (no aeroplanes are scheduled to retire) and will require around 8-9 crews per aircraft. The original schedule called for 6 deliveries, If this is slowed to 4, say, we'll still need around 70 new pilots. As some of the A346 commanders will come from the B744 fleet, those 70 will probably include a few new guys for that fleet.
