Thomsonfly
Looking for info on the rosters with Thomsonfly. I am interested if the job would allow a commuting lifestyle ie do you get blocks of days off? Stby's etc. Thanks
|
Hi guys,
May I also jump on that bandwagon, any info is greatly appreciated. Regards Le Loup Garou |
I am in the same situation. Any info?
|
How many sectors do you tend to fly per day? Do you have an Easyjet or an FR-like work pattern (5 on 3 off or 4 on 2 off with either earlies or lates)? What is the estimated Captain upgrade time?
Looks like you have pretty good destination variety. Seems like a great gig.... How do you like living near Coventry (cheap or expensive)? |
LVL CHG,
Check your PM's!! :ok: HA DET BRA! |
Are you lot 1st October as well?
|
I am also considering a move to thomsonfly. any chance of some info on the above questions for me too?
cheers:ok: |
Come on T-Fly pilots, this has been asked a couple of times, always without reply!
Shed some light! :) |
The rosters are great. I live away from Cov and get ample opportunity to go home (5 on followed by 4-6 off). Stability is pretty much absolute (one change in last 3 months). Rosters do mean either an early start (usually before 0600) or a late start (1400 ish) and 3 times a week there are deep night flights (enough pilots though so this comes around very seldom). Either way still get loads of time off between duties and have yet to be rostered for minimum rest. Mostly 2 sectors a day, though there are a couple of 4 sector days.
A friendly, professional and fun bunch to work with. Expansion plans are pretty intersting too. :D :ok: |
Ditto what said Fawlty, plus no standbys either. We do have blank days on your roster, which in theory can be assigned for work, but in practice this is highly unusual.
We have inhreted BAL mainline rostering practices, which make it very difficult and/or expensive for them to change our duties, therefore ensuring roster stability. Flexible working is great! |
Thanks Fawlty and 2MP, very useful information.
Any chance of also giving an idea of after-tax monthly pay for year 1 for an average month? How does this compare to mainline? Also, other perks such as staff travel or discounted TUI holidays etc? How much is taken out of salary to pay for the type rating? Thanks again for the info. |
Fawlty
Sounds like too many Pilots to me??. R u sure Thompson Fly is Loco? |
Does anybody Know how many of us in the holding pool?
|
About 60 ish in the holding pool I think. About 15 of which are 737 type rated already. Probably called up for jobs dependent upon how well you did in the sim.
On a different note has anyone any ideas on where this 3rd base will be? or when it´s being announced? Thanks in advance for any replies.:D |
Bournemouth is a strong rumour (Major Base).
|
So anyone offered a course yet? (Type-rated or non type-rated)
|
Cheers Charles any ideas on when it might become official?
Thanks. |
Does anyone knows which routes are going to be flown by Thomson out of Doncaster???
Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between Britannia contract and Thomson??? Cheers |
Hi all,
I've got an assessment on 29 Oct, which I understand is for Doncaster. Am considering going to the open day next week. Has anyone been to one (open day) already? Is it worth it? Also, has anyone got salary info for FOs? Thanks Andy |
I'm there on the 29th as well, think salary for FO is 38200 plus duty pay 9 p/hr.
|
Highlandman,
Yes there is a difference. Believe they are trying to make less of a difference. We will see. MAX:cool: |
Max, you mean BY are trying to lower the 'mainline' package closer to T-fly? I hadn't realised there was much of a difference between the two (apart from the 3 grand per year deduction for non-rated pilots).
|
There is a difference in basic and pension as well as duty/sector pay. I dont think mainline terms will be lowered. More bringing TFLY up to scratch to entice senior FO's in mainline to take left hand seat 737 jobs.
MAX:cool: |
Hello Max,
Do you think eventually, the low cost sector TF and the mainline Brit will become one??? Meaning everyone on the same contract "Thomson". I which them luck, hope it work, specially as I love to work for them. I hear that you have to pay for your type over 3 years 5000£/year off your salary, can anyone confirm or correct. Cheers |
If I was to guess i would say all new hires would join on the TFLY terms and conditions regardless of fleet as its all becoming the one name. But what do i know?
MAX:cool: |
I've had a lovely letter inviting me for an assessment as well. Good info, hope it keeps coming!

Just to add my 5 penneth.
Currently, whether you join Mainline, or Tfly, there is only ONE seniority list for Britannia pilots. Also, under current Ts & Cs, Tfly pilots have the option to bid for a mainline position after 5 yrs' service & enjoy mainline 'perks' (salary, pension, holidays etc, etc). HOWEVER, last week's announcement has currently raised more questions than there are answers; hopefully, we will find out more about the proposals/negotations soon. There is also the possibility in the future of 737/757 shared type ratings - something that would be an advantage at DSA - but my guess is that this is still some way off for a variety of reasons (CAA approval, BALPA etc). I agree with Max that the Ts & Cs of Tfly are likely to be raised for the reasons he states, but I can envisage some reduction in mainline Ts & Cs as well. How much & who will be affected, I just don't know at the moment. Whatever you choose, good luck & all the best. Backtrack. |
for non rated pilots any idea about the 737 training period? where? how long? and also how long in the line training?. Can anybody explain this process. thanks
|
Any inside info on the direct entry Captain salary and overall package value ?
|
thompsonfly
do we think that as ts fly expands and wants to compete in the "low cost " market ,it can or will do so with the 5 on 5off rostering etc suggested earlier? or just a flash in the pan

Such seemingly "slack" rosters are actually a bit of a masterstroke by Tfly. This is something that was pioneered in Britannia a few years back and the idea works something like this: Roster pilots with extra days off, allowing some slack in the system. Then allow pilots to "sell" days back at a certain daily rate, which works out between £300 and £450 depending on rank. This is a system which the CC had pushed and the company reluctantly took on. The result is savings in the millions due to almost no subcharters, few delays and the most stable rosters in the business. You see, the system relies on the fact that we are largely motivated by money! This is a system that to my knowledge is not used by other locos on this side of the Atlantic but it is in North America (where the idea came from in the first place). So to answer the question raised in the previous post, yes, you can expect this type of rostering to continue.
Captain's salary year 0 is £61000 and rises approximately £1000 a year to year 4 then rises approximately £500 a year until year 10 where it stops at around £70000. Block hour pay is £12.50 for captains and about £9 for FOs, with a £25 incidental nightstop allowance. Pension is money purchase, company 7.5% and pilot 8.25%. Most of the other T&C's are the same as britannia mainline which I am sure is posted somewhere else on this site. Zippy. |
Thanks for all the info!
Anyone with infos about the routes they want to fly out of Doncaster and the other bases? Someone said that there are about 60 in the holding pool but they are still recruiting? I thought they just need about 50 pilots for the new bases. Anyone with other ideas? |
I passed my initial assessment with Britannia last December, the day before they announced the name and the base of Thomsonfly. I was called in for a direct entry command but I'm not rated on the 737.
I was successful but had to wait for the sim ride. They kept postponing it and I stopped harassing them in April. Now, I got an e-mail saying they were starting to recruit again, thanks for your patience,etc... I called them on Friday and they said they didn't know if they still needed captains. Does anyone understand what is going on? |
Altyre,
I do know of at least one course, early Jan I think, of non type rated direct entry captains. I have also heard that "mainline" are very keen to see more of their F/O's transfer. Perhaps then, the proposed sweetening of the T-Fly package may induce more internal movement. Bid for transfer has to be in by today( last I read ), so I imagine the powers of be, will then have a better idea of how many empty left seats they are going to have. Personally, I dont think there will be much change in levels of interest, as the "new deal" will not be finalised until after you are required to make your binding bid for transfer. A bit like signing a blank cheque IMHO. Hope that helps, BB |
By any chance would anyone know if a lot of F/O transfered form Britannia to TF and when is the first flight suppose to start from Donsacter and Bournemouth.
|
highlandman
The plan would seem to be that both bases will start operations next March. At start up, 6 F/Os went for Tfly commands and it would appear that another 3 have so far indicated that they will go during this phase. The recent bid round may have thrown up some more and, of course, they may be some 'internal' Tfly candidates. My guess is, however, that not all the command requirements will be settled from within. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I hope this helps. |
I heard that of the 78 positions available 50 are transfers from 757/767. I don't know whether these are LHS or RHS. Good news for any potential S/O's in the pool waiting for a 757 job perhaps.
|
If your numbers are correct, it is a very good news!!!!
It looks to me It is a lot of people to train before next spring, specialy when you known how long the interview process is. Does anyone knows if they are opening Bournemouth and Doncaster at the same date? Can anyone else confirm that many pilot moving from mainline to Thomsonfly. Cheers. |
Reliable sources say that a surprisingly large number of Britannia FOs have bid for Thomsonfly command positions. We will not know how many until the second week of November when decisions are made re command suitability of those who bid.
Not sure of exact base opening dates but yes, the timeline is incredibly tight. Zippy. |
Hi Zippy2004,
Are there any news on how many pilots they now need on either fleet? How many have gone from the "mainline" to Thomsonfly? What about the bases? Any news on where they might need people? Thanks a lot for your info! |
