Swiss to resize

according to the Swiss Sunday papers SWISS board of directors will decide on laying off 800 staff positions and grounding 15 aircraft tomorrow.
This will give the pilot union fight a new dimension as to the question of who will have to go. It seems that Swiss does not need any competition.
The company is managing quite well in destroying itself without any outside interference. The only good thing to come out of this mess will be a case study on how not to do it.

They will have to cut more than that to survive.Too bad,and the crossair guys will have to take the big part of it.
SWISS is heading into the same direction as Swissair;simply look at the facts.

Too bad, some of them bought property and planed to make permanent living in France and work in CH. I was telling my friends never expect to have long term employment with Swiss but they did not have much choice after 911 specially the non EU.
I hope everyone will get reasonable compensation.

Hi Efcop,

The word "grounding" has ominous connotations in Switzerland.
What was the source, by the way?

today's issue of "sonntagszeitung"

http://www.sonntagszeitung.ch/sz/szU...ausgabeid=2895

although swiss was quick to claim that the figures were all wrong we all know what history has taught us...

as to the "grounding" yes it does have a familiar ring to it.
it is a day that most of us will never forget!

"How not to run an airline" Written by André D together with his penpals Rainier G. and Philip B.

Coming soon to a bookshop near you !

--------------------

We´ll see what happens tomorrow. We´ve been there before, rumours in the papers resulting in lot´s of speculation.

Everybody knows that Swiss needs to reduce it´s size. There are just a 3 questions ;

1) how many ? (how many lay off´s can AD get away with without upsetting public Swiss opinion too much and thus saving his own ass)

2) when to make the move ? (too bad that that evil Mr Bush has not attacked Iraq yet, that would have been a nice excuse)

3) How to distribute the lay off´s between the 2 (ex- SR and old-LX) pilot corps.

Let´s see how they will handly this one.

Interesting times.... decisions, decisions, decisions!!!
Another day in the life of Swiss..... there is a tomorrow as well.
Good questions 1 to 3, next is who is answering to that, and who pays for the price of been streetbound, the ex-pats, the seniority system, or unfairness???
It seems the newspapers get informed well ahead of company emloyees.
I leave you to make a speculative conclusion, as much as the emloyees do....... they are kept in the dark as mushroom bait..!!!

OK efcop - read that. I originally understood your post to mean that 15 aircraft would be grounded tomorrow!

On more careful reading, I see that it means the decision is to be taken tomorrow. In the paper it said, "15 Flugzeuge (sollen) aus dem Verkehr genommen werden " - taken off the route (at some stage). Well it's bad news for the airline but not as drastic for the customers as had they been kept on the deck tomorrow...

They go on to say that it will mainly be "small Saab machines but also certain medium range Airbusses".

Could just be getting a bit more orange around ZRH.

Yes 124,8, really sad. If an employee wants to know what´s going on in our company, they have to ask for a rotation which includes a Sunday so they can read the latest news in the Sunday papers.

middlepath,

As to your statement regarding the EMB 145 who else flies this crap, well quite a large number of operators actually and its far from being crap with over 700 built so far. It has become a useful type to have on your licence.

I think you will find that more and more european operators will start to downsize aircraft and the new Embraer 170 series is going to sell in large numbers.

To those Swiss pilots finding themselves without a job have a look at Parc Aviations website as they are looking for EMB 145 rated pilots for a new start airline.

Good luck.

Must be a record - It took more than a day to get some Swiss news off the front page! At least we didn't end up in Ground Operations this time!

I did not know EMB is so popular. Its good news that our colleagues will get another rating of EMB 170 and be more marketable and Swiss be come flying school.

By the way I found only Boeing and airbus on parc aviation list.

Leading edge, can you please explain us where you found the above "fact".
simply look at the facts.
I think with the pending courtcase it is way too soon to speak about "facts" in this context.

Seems like a bit of a provocative post, rather than an informative one...

It would be only fair if the management would include their own names in the list of job cuts.
