Redundancy and sickness

Can anyone help. If someone is off sick, and certificated by the doctor, can he/she be made redundant whilst OFF sick? Seems to me that this can't happen, but some clarification would be useful. Maybe someone has a link to a legal site that may help.
Thank you.

It obviously depends which law applies. A friend of me was under treatment for 6 months, back problems with subsequent surgery and recovery, and this sickness was taken as the ground for making him redundant. The court afterwards confirmed the companies decision as correct....
