Getting VAT registered??
How do you go about getting VAT registered?? Is it as simple as filling in a form and seeing an accountant?
I'm now becoming a self employed FI rather than a PAYE one and would like to not pay VAT on any future training courses that I might do.
Thanks in advance.

To be VAT registered you have to be a 'business' and not merely a contractor, which is what you will be as a 'self employed FI'. Anyway, there is a threshold, 50k I believe it is, so thats over 10 times what you will be making as an Instructor...

Quite right Meeb, the threshold is £50000 for mandatory registration but you can also volontarily register below that. Also it is not how much you make but more like how big is your turnover. Anyway, the Inland Revenue website is quite good at explaining the basic idea so if you haven't already done so, check Here
