Institutional shareholders, who kicked up a bit of a fuss this year about the lack of obvious succession plans at British Airways, were notable by their absence - or at least their silence - at the airline's annual meeting yesterday.

But Lord Marshall, British Airways chairman (who will be 69 in November and has no plans to step down), decided to get his retaliation in first. Many at the meeting would agree that "the values of age and experience should not be dismissed lightly", he smoothly suggested.

A tactical error. Up popped a 56-year-old former BA air stewardess to ask why pilots and cabin crew had to retire at 55.

Marshall admitted that looming legislation barring age discrimination might force BA to rethink its age barrier. But - surprise, surprise - he showed no inclination to lead from the front on the issue
