It is not a european law. There is a european regulation that has to be put into national law and those national laws differ. There might be some caveats to allow some very specific cases where age discrimination is legal. In germany it is for example legal to have an upper age limits for ATCO Trainees.

Constitution of the Portuguese Republic:

Article 13
(Principle of equality)
1. All citizens possess the same social dignity and are equal before the law.
2. No one may be privileged, favoured, prejudiced, deprived of any right or exempted from any duty for reasons of ancestry, sex, race, language, territory of origin, religion, political or ideological beliefs, education, economic situation, social circumstances or sexual orientation.

As far as I know, there's no law that allow TAP to use age discrimination, but... And to that requirements, add FLUENCY in Portuguese.

And some say that an increase in the minimum requirements, in respect of the flight hours, may be expected.

The number of vacancies might as well increase, depending on the number of pilots that will leave to the Middle East.

Only rumours, though...

Itīs only the British that are so law-abiding/naive to instantly implement all EU regulations/guidance. Just look at the road signage in the UK. Totally EU compliant with so many signs, colours and fences. In the meantime the rest of the EU just gets on with it.

Hi All,

We all know that age discrimination is from far one of the biggest issues in TAP Recruiting system, nevertheless i agree with you Rui the principle of Equality should be observed, but as a Portuguese you and i both know that no one ever try till now to impugn this system, because you and i know that final outcome.
But regarding to the Portuguese language requirement i understand quite easily, youīll find it at LH, BA with the Level 6, and so on...

Regarding to the requirements itīs too soon to determine what will they be, as well the number of vacancies, last year they stated in the planning they will need 13 FO and in the end they recruited 36, regarding the minimums itīs a mystery.

Those jobs are gone already. You have to move in the right circles to get one of those positions. Nepotism and cronyism are intrinsic. The connected people reserve these seats for each other. I'm sure I will hurt certain sensitive feelings but it's nonetheless it's true.

With the threat of industrial action, the company finally acknowledged its agreement with the Pilots for 130 yearly days off (enforcement will start on the second trimester of 2012).

With those changes and many people leaving to the Middle East, expect hiring in higher numbers than initially planned.

As i know, some European citizens sucessfully joined in last years, and whithout connections. And at the time, not so fluent in Portuguese. (level3).
Send the "Papers" Used to be 1000 hours, 320 type rating, a must!
Leaving to Middle East? Why? They used to be united and proud of the Company!

Syntax and Casper

Both of you are correct!!!

I guess at the end of the day it comes down to "supply and demand", but .... given that there has not been much recruitment in recent times, I reckon that the backlog of people with the right connections has accumulated and, this time, it will be more the case of what Syntax is saying.

Safe flying,
Zero
