Care to enlighten me with your bidding system

I work as a university professor but also used to fly for the airlines.
I have a course on the airline industry and wanted to discuss the various bidding systems that are in place for crew planning (not the computer system but the type of system to let pilots plan their lives and flying).
I only know the few systems that are used at the airlines I worked at.

Anyone else want to share with me how their system works?

I am used to this:
1. Bidding on a monthly line with most senior getting their first choice (many US carriers use this)

There was a great article once by AIR Inc. in the US about various systems out there, but that was many years ago and I would probably never find it again.
