Airline Training Captain lifestyle
Hi, just out of curiousity, what is it like to be an Airline Training Captain?
Like how often do you actually fly on the line, and train other pilots in the Sim?
I read one pilot on a blog mention they have to fly a certain amount of days each month on the line to keep current. But they get first pick on which trips to fly (even if it means bumping another pilot ). But they get a more flexible lifestyle for family and even Christmas off.
Do you get an instructor pay premium in addition to your contracted salary?
I'm sure it varies with airlines, but any insight would help.
Thanks

+more pay (10-25%) more kudos, more time off in summer, sense of giving something back, so long as you train rather than just check. Next rung up to management.
-more contact with management, stuck in Box over winter, often in Hotac, hard to keep current on MFF, ALC's sitting on the jumpseat for hours.
quite a few give it up over lifestyle issues, but it will always look good on the CV.

Sim trainers aren't always flight check and trainers.
E.g. At the airline I work for (Qantas regional airline) the Line Training Captains are treated just like normal line pilots except that some of their flying is done training the other pilot. If they are right-seat qualified (i.e. they can train FO's to be captains) then when on reserve they can be called out to fill in for a sick FO as well.
So their lifestyle is similar to that of a line Captain. Extra pay (around 20%) and sometimes they get preferential roster bidding. No extra consideration around public holidays/christmas, etc.
We're a bit short of line Check Captains atm, so they get flogged a bit more. Around half of their work is in the jump seat. Extra pay as well (around 15%)
Also a bit short of Sim check and trainers, who spend most of their time in the Sim. Many of these guys struggle for recency when flying the line.
Wouldn't necessarily say that it's a step upwards in the Management ladder (some of our Management pilots were previously line pilots) but it is a common pathway.

Checkers and trainers?
There are plenty of checkers around. A checker will tell you what you are doing wrong.
A trainer will tell you what you are doing wrong and then do their best to tell you how to do it right.
Big difference between the two.
