We are needed .
With the current no fly in western Europe , just look at the losses it created in just three days .So it just goes to show how much we are under valued . As for the lay off don't think so ,even with MOL hate for pilot he is not that stupid to shoot him self in the foot with summer season coming soon .

LHC,
I'm stocked up on Volvic..
If you want to worry about something, forget volcanic ash and peak oil. Worry about water. Without that, we're all screwed.

OMG
"Why in heaven's name does KLM not start with doing the right thing and cut down on their excess salaries throughout the company?"
You must be retarded, or a management guy. Why would any flying employee claim that any ones salaries are to high?? Goes beyond my understanding.
You lead the way to rock bottom T&C:s

Cash Flow
The immediate problem facing all carriers is cash flow, not profits. Right now, another few large-ish airlines in Europe are likely to enter administration and stop flying forthwith. Governmental aid is unlikely. At the same time, some of the bigger and cash-rich airlines will do very well, ASSUMING the ash cloud disperses within 2-3 weeks. (After that time period, if the volcanic ash problem remains where it is, all bets are off).

MOL might be looking forward to the new challenge ahead, like you say some airlines will be struggling even harder now and this may be the straw for the camel and all that.
from my limited knowledge of the company assets and costing, at the moment theres about 50% pilots costing nothing (BRK), no handling charges as there not doing 25min spins, no fuel cost as there not flying, costs will be trimmed back and back so not to eat too much into the 2-3? Billion in the bank!
reckon it will be a case of guns blazing when the sky re-opens, only initial hassle is getting the train set back on the correct rails and milking it for all its worth as others go under (hope not for jobs sake) but quite likely.

Ryanair will not paying their pliots much anyway now that they're all sitting around on the ground.
Ryanair employees are always on here telling us about their massive cash reserves so I expect things will be just dandy for them.

Just heard McNamara are putting their cut up to 4 % to make up for lost revenue.
Surly thats a wind up! they cant just decide to take more money, if that was the case can BRK pilots charge more to FR to "Make up for lost revenue?!?"

I wish I could believe that! I really do, but I think the way the company is run and the many different countries its is with people from all over the world I don't think there is a union capable of real results.
on another note the tittle of this thread seems to be complete horse sh$$ and think a MOD should shut it down or change the name at least.

Okay all you cynics
what is your take on MOL cancelling everything except Southern European domestic and Southern European originating Southbound flights till 1300 on Wed 21st ,even as Eurocontrol are making half promises that they expect 50% of flights to operate tomorrow , with airspace being opened all the time.
Official line "to give our passengers as much opportunity to apply for refunds
Yeah right ! and make rebookings" Ah he does have a heart after all.
It seems they mean it too, of 18 parked airframes at GRO, where normally one would find 10, more than half of them had engines wrapped in big polythene bags (the lo-cost version of these nice red Boeing engine covers) with static/pitots also securely put to bed, with some cobbled together masking tape/polythene condom, by 16L.
Seems a bit little bit OTT (since I haven't seen a whiff of falling ash this far South) , if one was truly proposing to start flying all again as soon as Wed ? ?
Guess parking is cheap (read free) in GRO.
Hmnn, "I have a cunning plan melord"
"Yes MOL/Baldrick pray tell me
"
With apologies to Leo for all those "yellow men" that he so detests
