Flight Deck to Cabin
Hey possibly the wrong forum for this but as redundancy is a huge topic just wanted to see out of interest, how many FD would consider working the cabin after redundancy whilst awaiting to get back to the controls? Simply to keep busy and in the "environment"? I personally keep considering it but so far have not yet been able to carry on with it! Don't know why...think the public scare me! lol

Having done a few "summer sun" flights recently and noting the quality of our clientèle I wouldn't go near it. Consider being constantly resented and abused by the travelling public for enforcing the safety rules. I would last about 5 minutes before I would lose the rag and no doubt be hauled up in front of management and/or the courts. No thanks. If it all turns to custard then I would rather go back to working in an office. I honestly have no idea how they put up with their job and my hat is definitely off to them.

I would, but then I spent 4 years as cabin crew while studying for my licence. I had a great time and there are bits of the job I miss now being up the front. If I had to go back then I would no question.
You need a lot of patience and good people skills if you are to enjoy it. But make sure you really think you can do it. The last thing the Cabin crew you work with will want is you moaning about being crew and wishing you were back at the front. Could cause more harm than good when trying to secure another flying job. Just my opinion though.

potkettleblack makes a good point you still have to ascertain the suitability of the individual concerned. It certainly isn't a job "you can walk into" and their are plenty of non flightdeck guys and gals with huge enthusiasm banging down the recruitment doors.
Saying that I'm totally unsuitable

I've been working in the cabin due to redundancy last year and enjoying it most of the time. Needless to say I can't wait to have a good, sturdy door between me and the passengers again!

Ahhhh Flash8, I wasn't implying I'd be a shoe-in just caus i can fly the plane, I would IMAGINE it was a bonus just to get through any preliminary screening, but maybe I'd be utter sh!te as CC. I did work check-in and boarding and baggage handling when doing the ATPL's/flight training, so I have "some" people skills....on paper anyways! lol But yeah, I'd be concerned about dealing with knob-end passengers, especially the drunken yobs!!!! Think in some regards women handle that better, its less confrontational and they can generally make a bloke feel 2inches tall!!!! But apart from that, would you go mad not being up the front? I'd still give it a go if only to travel a bit if I could swing getting onto a longhaul gig! Which seems to happen quicker these days! To be honest anything to get out of the frickin house and earn some money!!!

If you decide to do it, then I would simply say make sure you give it all you can and make sure you are successful.
I have just come back from a trip with a colleague in the cabin who is riding out the recession after his type rating course was cancelled, and it is clear to everyone that he does not want to be there. Consequently, he has got a bad reputation within the company, is unlikely to be taken on once things improves, earns very little and is contributing a corresponding amount to the organisation. Not a happy state of affairs for anyone.
Do think carefully before making this move. As someone commented above, it's not a job you can simply walk into. The skill set is very different and I have great admiration for those who can face the travelling public every day and keep smiling.
