Questions about Low-Costs

Good morning,
I´m new to this board. I don´t have an ATPL (yet) . But I´m thinking of trying to get one in the next years.

I have just a couple of questions about working for some low-costs like Air Berlin, EZY, and so on

First of all do pilots have to pay for food when flying for AB/EZY ? What about others?

How many overnights a month are usual for AB/EZY pilots ?
In what kind of hotels do they usually stay ?

Another question about DLH

On their website it says that many pilots don´t live at their bases FRA or MUC, but all over Germany and Europe and come there for their happenings with low-cost flight tickets.

My question : Does LH pay for accomodation (room to live) when pilots are in FRA or MUC ? I don´t think so

Wiht Ezy when you first join you get a salad sandwich. After the second year you are entitled to an apple. Year 4 gives you an upgrade to a veggie hot meal then you have to wait until your command to get a rubbery bit of chicken. The hotels are variable in quality from very good to very poor. I hope this helps.

Veggie hot meal in year 4?! I only get a kick in the bollocks in year 4.. I have to wait til year 6 for the apple...

At the risk of sounding serious...

For eJ, crew food is supplied onboard by the company. But years ago, the flight crew paid for it out of their wage and this continues today, so yes we pay for it to be supplied. The quality varies and the sarcasm from the other guys is due to the current issues with crew food. I'm not even gonna go there...

As for night stops, it can vary but I've done up to ten in a month this year and none in the previous three years. All depends.

Well I'm very ungruntled now. We just get a slice of Hovis in the first year. Second year you can have some non-butter margerine. Hotels are OK, once you get the tramps out of your bed. They do leave long blonde hairs on the pillows though.

Screwballs I think the reply I gave was pretty similar to yours but laced with a bit of sarcasm to cover the shameful way we have been swindled out of quality crew food but still paying for it.
Rubik hit it on the head. This guy/girl is about to commit him/herself to 12+ months of hard work then a long career in a cockpit/flightdeck having paid over to several training organizations 10 of thousands of pounds/euros and all that concerns them at this stage is crew food and night stops.

Hi,

AB give crew food but always the same thing! (Salad, bread roll, actimel etc).

Re DLH. Yes a lot of crew travel at their own expense (and not just DLH, most companies are the same). And no, the company does not foot the bill for accommodation at home base.

Take your own food. It's considerably better than anything that the airline hotels will offer you. Mostly low co airlines don't do night stops so a caravan in the staff car park will allow you to have a decent amount of time off, and minimise your commute times.

Well, bmw, here you see the effects crew food has on human brains! Food and hotels should not be a reason to join this circus - become a restaurant critic or a travel author instead. Or go the LH way!

NOT a stupid question!

Hey You´ll find a lot of stupid answersm, but in fact your questions is a valid point! Crew food does say something, how the company cares about you. Compared to other cost (e.g. fuel) it is a small amount in a chain and there are money other ways to save some money.

There should be no doubt, that we as pilots should have a decent crew meal on board, after beeing on long duty within a very critical safety area. It does affect our performance! So at the end, your questions is quite important and you deserve a good answer.

......but won't get one here! Sad to say, when I were a lad, the last thing I thought about with an airline career was what flavour sandwiches I'd get. At that stage, I'd have paid my own hotel costs to get there!

I have to confess we did have dripping* on our Hovis. You stood under the wing catching the leaking fuel, for flavour.

*- it's a Brit thing. Better not to ask.

aircrew meals

strangely enough i was doing a long haul flight last week and the crew came back to say there was no meal for me in the catering that was just loaded only for the skipper . He asked if I was willing to fly I said no. Catering duly went back and got me one.

It was a strange occurrence and not one i expected just goes to show these things do happen.
