AMERICAN TAKES THE CAKE; LEAVES NO CRUMBS
AMERICAN TAKES THE CAKE; LEAVES NO CRUMBS: Airline employees who were
lucky enough to negotiate good contracts with American Airlines are on
the verge of being left out in the cold, while the company pockets an
expected $800 million from the $15 billion government bailout. American
says an "emergency clause" in its contracts allows it to get away with
leaving some 20,000 laid-off workers high and dry with no severance pay.
Yesterday, Northwest jumped on that bandwagon, saying it will also
invoke the clause to cut off workers without a dime. Job cuts at the
airlines already total about 93,000, with more expected, plus another
30,000 at Boeing. Union leaders, no surprise, promise a fight ahead.
