- 50$/block hour with no minimum garanteed
- 50$ per diem
- HOTAC + breakfast
- Saudi visa paid, but not vaccination.
If you get sick and must be flown back home, expect the employer to ask you to be on duty on the next flight going to an airport "close enough" from base (whatever that means). Once there, you're on your own. And don't even ask for a refund of your plane/train ticket, the company already lost enough money.

Hi guys!
Maybe this should be on a different forum, but here I go anyway.
Some agencies are still advertising a lot for B747-200 drivers, and knowing that I could get a job with zero hour on type, I would just go ahead and get the type rating, money from my own pocket, that is.
So what do you think? Too many drivers already unemployed at the moment, just a waste of time and money or I should just go right ahead. BTW, experience not a problem.
Thank you.

Still not that easy to get a job on the Hajj with just the type...
Some new new things came up. A few of the contractors are not accepting US, Canadian or British passport(Other EU than British OK) holders this year.
Hajj is starting in a weeks time and most of the operators are crewed now. It would probably a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks to get the type You´d be a bit late for the Hajj. Not a bad type to have if you feel you can use it for something else.
Cheers

Ooooh yes... The Hajj is so "special" that it's almost a type rating in itself.
Lots of operators wouldn't feel comfortable putting a brand new Capt. or F/E in that kind of ops.
Is Saudia part of the contractors who refuse US, Canadian and UK nationals ?

I did't know that Saudia had a ban on western flight crews, where did you get that information from?

Nope. Nothing to do with Saudi Arabia or Saudia. These are customer requests from other countries.I have talked with several crew leasing agencies and companies looking for crews for Hajj. No US, Canadian or british passports apply to limited number of jobs. And I am sure once they can´t find enough suitable candidates they will waive this rule too.

Thanks Guys,
I knew I was too late for the Hajj, I meant to find work doing contracts around April-May.
BTW, I have done a bit of Hajj but on the A300-600 couple of years ago, but very limited I have to admit.
I know I have the background for direct entry Captain, but I would be happy to ride the right seat for awhile, if the opportunity arises. Any chance to get that right seat job with zero hour on type? Comments, advice welcome.
Anecdote: I got an email from a friend of mine the other day who flies for Mauritius and he said " I hope Sept. 11 did not effect your flying career too much" and I replied "No, it did not effect it all, I was not working prior to Sept. 11, and still not working". Ha!!!
Regards to you all!

Crew leasing agencies ? Okay...
BTW, I really don't see the point of blowing up an empty plane or even 300 pilgrims just to kill a crew. Terrorists like symbols. Isolated weirdos might try something, but not terrorist networks like Al-Qaeda.
The Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of islam, so why would they spend time, money, and energy on a project to disrupt it ?

Judging by the number of western flight crew wandering around in Saudia uniforms or operating leased aircraft for them, I suspect that the agency was telling you porkies

Oops ! Mutt, it seems we're not on the same frequency here.
I haven't been talking to a crew leasing agency for years now, and that's probably why I asked if Saudia became reluctant to hire US, Canadian and UK nationals... with the potential side-effects you will have no problem to imagine !

Taking this in a slightly different direction now: who of you is going to Jeddah this year? I´m leaving next week and was hoping for some practical advice on what to take. E.g. do EC-cards work or CIRRUS, electric adaptors, laptop or is it unadvisable? What´s customs like ? I afraid I´ll have to leave those pictures of my wife at home, the ones with the bathing suit...
Appreciate any useful comments from old Arabia hands,

I wouldnt worry about bringing the laptop, I havent heard about anyone having them inspected. I would however suggest that you bring some warm clothes, it freezing down here!

I took my laptop last year. They looked at it but never asked mr to switch it on. I took the precaution of removing anything that could be deemed offensive prior to going. But you only have to go to the local intenet cafe to see that somethings hold true the whole world over.
