BMI Interview
Hi Guys,
I have a BMI interview next week.
Can anyone tell me what I can expect?
What questions they ask and what they would like to hear?

BMI interview
Someone will pick you up from reception. relaxed atmosphere, into small room with two people. One Pilot/TRE other may be HR orientated but still a pilot. Depending on who you get. Questions I got were, what makes you laugh?, Films you like. Tell me about yourself from cradle, i.e. senior school to now.
Then there are lots of give me an example of when you had conflict/success/difficulty in communication./dealing with change./built a relationship with someone outside your normal circle.
You definitely need to have thought about certain examples you can draw on.
Company questions varied from shareholders to routes and how you could save money what aircraft have we got.etc.
There were technical questions, why podded engines on wings vs fuselage mounted. What is fly by wire, what happens to centre of pressure as AOA increased. Nothing that the book ACE the pilot technical quiz can't answer.
My impression was sychophants are welcome so pucker up. They really want to know why they are great and why they should give you a job. Which is fair enough. I think you have to really want a job specifcally with them to be successfull remeber be sincere if you can fake that yuor half way there.
I was not successful, there was no feedback,

Wandering around the crew room the other day I didn't see too many sychophants brown nosing their way around.
One of bmi's strengths has long been the type of people recruited. We have a mixture of ex military, self improvers, and Oxford type graduates, most of whom are generally very good company on a day out.
Yes you're expected to have a reasonable knowledge of what we do and where we go. But a bit of reading up is surely little more than good manners.
Sorry you didn't get in, but perhaps its best for both sides.

Have to agree with NUBBOY on this one.
I have also recently had the BMI interview and was thankfully successful
However I can be confident in saying that 'brown nosing' was not the reason, mainly because I realised that a lot of people would take that route and as an 'older modular' guy I would have to take a more individual approach!
Yes I did a lot of research on the company (why wouldnt I?)
Yes I had my reasons prepared as to why I wanted to join BMI (again why wouldnt I?)
More importantly I was relaxed, confident in my opinions and made a joke or two!
Im sorry you didnt get through Zachari1 but maybe that was down to your approach..... quote........"I think you have to really want a job specifcally with them", if it came across that you didnt really care who you worked for aslong as you were paid, well.... maybe some would consider that a negative feature?!
Anyway Im sure you will have gained experience from this and good luck for next time.

I'm in One Day Soon's situation too.
Sycophants as you state Z1 is totally wrong. If you come across as though you really want to work for the company, and prove this by knowing something about bmi and they feel they can tolerate you for hours on end in a 2 person flight deck then you're in.
If you come across as though you don't care, and are not keen then you won't get in. Same in any career or job. You're selling yourself at the end of the day and they are buying into you.
It is the same thing as if you had a double glazing salesman come into your house at your request to sell windows.
All the guys I've met there are good fair people. Also best policy is don't fake. Most people who get an opportunity at bmi do want the job I guess, I know I did.

application dates
Having applied with them on mid-april, I was advised that all the interview slots are filled until the end of the year and that no more CV's are accepted.
For those who got interviews dates, would you mind indicating when you applied ?

Were all you guys lucky enough to get in:-
Type Rated with hours on type?
If so, how many hours on type did you have?
What other experience did you have?
I have been applying for a few years now but no luck.
I have 5000 hrs jet and not even a sniff of an interview.

Ive a lot in common with SINBIN on this.....
Im Old, modular,240hrs with no type rating!
So according to most 'pruners' on here I had no chance but im in
But im damned determined and worked hard in each phase including interview prep and sim check prep and as Sinbin said i think it was this that makes the difference when selling yourself to a company who has hundreds of applications each month.
P.s. During the interview and simcheck I was with guys of modular and integrated, 21-40, 320 typed, 737 typed, no type and military! So im pretty sure 'personality' is the key factor at BMI.

phoned the bmi pilot recruitment phone line in Jan 07 and got the usual...not recruiting..... but if you have an airbus type rating......
So what did you do? Knock on the door with CV in hand?

call me stupid, but I'm finding it pretty hard on finding any data about just bmi mainline. for example, exactly what their routes are? Everything I find is bmi and bmi regional...

Angelorange - I sent an email on spec with a cv attached to the recruitment guy listed on ppjn. Never beleive recruitment phone lines, usually when airlines say they aren't recruiting they sometimes are.
Blinkz - there are many sites that provide info, got most of mine off Wikipedia.
There was heavy recruitment in January-March, word got out and apparently they were 'swamped' thereafter. I guess a few of us just got lucky.

How long before the upgrade to the 330 comes around? And do you get to fly both types at the same time?

All very good points. I attended the interview at the start of May, having sent off my CV at the end of November. I'm modular, low houred and 737 rated. I can confirm that it's pretty much a personality thing. I did a lot of research on the company - the information's there if you need it: even on their own website!
Sycophant is the wrong word. If you are genuinely interested in flying for the airline then this will come across at interview. If you see it as just another company and don't really care where your first job comes from this will also quickly become apparent. Personally I was so pleased and surprised that bmi offered me an interview that they really became the only airline I wanted to work for!
I have heard a similar thing regarding interview dates: I think some may have missed the boat now. There's a holding pool which new joiners are going into, so I suspect they won't accept CVs now until next year.

I apologise if I have offended the BMI residents. If you read a little more carefully the comment "which is fair enough" relates to fact that knowledge of the Company and really wanting to get a job specifically with BMI are a prerequisite. I wrote this to help others to prevent them from being as severely disappointed, as I was at not getting in. I hope to benefit from others advice and in anticipation of this I posted what experience I had. As you read, it was not a diatribe of sour grapes just a subjective opinion. I cannot like you talk from a position of smugness and I have certainly learned something from my experience. As you say maybe it was best for both of us.
