Hi !
Cant really tell you about the conditions at Air Astana.
But I can tell you that Almaty is a nice place to be. Been there for the last 4 month and had a lot of fun.
Prices are comparable with european prices at the good restaurants.
If your stomach is in good condition you can also life from the little places at the roads. Very cheap there.
Lot to do in your free time.
Enjoy

Good Day,
I am responding to your question on the Air Astana six month contract.
Currently flying for KC (air astana) through DPI (direct personnel int'l) as a first officer on B767 a/c.
In my opinion, I believe that the contract is really good.
Firstly, if you decide to come to Kazakhstan you must obtain a visa. This was arranged by KC. The company will arrange all the necessary documents and then forward it to you through DPI. Then, you will be required to travel to a city where an embassy for Kazakhstan is located. In my case, KC provided an airline ticket from Canada to London.
I was there for three days and the hotel was provided by the airline. The visa process only took one day(could be longer). Shortly after, I was good to travel to Almaty. KC will provide you with an air ticket to travel to Alamty.
Upon arrival at the airport I was greeted and assisted by a representative from KC, who then made sure I had transport to the hotel.
The hotel is the Hyatt (Rahat Palace). It is approx thirty minutes from the airport. It is a five star and it is really expensive. However, the breakfast is included with the room. There is also a pool, sauna, and gym free of charge. I lived there for one month and then moved out because I found my own flat.
You may continue to live in the hotel for the duration of the contract (I met one pilot who lived there nine months) or you may decide to have your own flat.
The airline will pay up to $2200 usd per month for one if you decide to go with this option. Utilities, internet, phone, cable tv are your own responsibility. However, some of my collegues have found reasonable flats for $2000 and then had the owner of the flat include the utilities, internet, cable tv as part of the montly rental package.
The city of Almaty has some very impressive scenery..mountains. They cover one half of the city. However, the city is not very impressive, actually it is dull to look at when you compare it other nice cities.
Very few people here speak english. I wish I could communicate better with them. The languages spoken here are kazak and russian. However, nearly everyone within the company speaks english, it may not be fluent but they manage to get the message across.
Hope this helps!
