Lufthansa info

Dear all,

I am looking for some information about Lufthansa. After my application two months ago i got an invitation for the DLR test in january.

What i would like to know is on which fleet are they recruiting at the moment?

I decided to put in an application when i read on the internet that they were looking for 50 F/O's on the freighter fleet. However in the online application form you need to tick boxes for which part of Lufthansa you would like to be considered. Which sounds nice but before you can go anywere you need to tick all boxes. Reading the additional information this means that they can interview you for Lufthansa mainline, Cargo, Cityline, Condor and Germanwings.

Now i have got a A320/330 (2000+ hours) rating and would be interested if anybody in the know can tell me which company i am most likely to go to. Is there any chance you get Lufthansa mainline or Cargo. Or are you just filling places from the other guys who leave Cityline, Condor or Germanwings to go to mainline or Cargo.

Thanks, CEJM

Best place to ask questions like that and even find some of them allready answered is www.pilots.de, after all LH requires you to be fluent in german anyway.

As far as i know they do not take a previous type rating into consideration and just offer you a spot where they need you most, at the moment that would be germanwings, cityline (quite different from the rest), condor berlin and probably cargo. Mainline, germanwings, condor berlin, cargo and condor are all under a general contract, the so called Konzerntarifvertrag, but there are considerable differences between every one of them. Cityline is not in that contract and pays flightdutytime and not blockhours.

Studi of course has the latest info's as he flys with them (iirc).

It seems to be pretty common to move from one LH company to the others, with the exception of Cityline which is its own special case. A couple of my friends started with Condor on the 757 after school (was in Bremen as well). One still flies there, the others all changed to other parts of LHs imperium, one did a one year stay on the MD11 at cargo then moved on to the A340 at classic as SFO and now has an offer as CPT at Germanwings, all within 6 years. Another just went from Condor to classic directly onto the A340 fleet at classic. Another one started out at Cityline and joined classic after 2 years on the A300 and was recently trained on the A340 as well. Condor could be something to avoid though, as there are talks about it being sold in the near future, moreover it is really two companies as well, Condor and Condor Berlin, the latter only operating A320 while the former operates a mix of 757-300 and 767.

Denti and Studi,

Thanks for your reply's.

The problem i've got at the moment is that i want to move to a longhaul company. And on the online application you need to tick the box that you are also interested in Germanwings, Condor or Cityline. As i am flying the A320/A330 at the moment with a command on the A320 coming up within the next two years i am not in a rush to go to Germanwings or Cityline. In that case i prefer to stay with my current employer and get my command.

Studi, could you tell me please how much chance there is for a Direct entry f/o to start on the MD11 with LH Cargo? From other Cityline employees i have heard that Cityline is looking for around 150 new pilots this year and expect a placement with them IF i pass the selection.

Thanks again for your reply's,

CEJM

Studi,

Thanks for your reply. Very informative and usefull. After reading your reply i think there is only one way forward and that is do the selection and IF i pass see what they have on offer. It's obviously very difficult to predict which fleet someone is going to and than of course it all can change again over time.

Regarding ticking the boxes. There is no choice you HAVE to tick the box which say's that you are interested in every fleet before you can proceed with the application.

A couple of questions came up after reading your reply.

Why is LH Cargo not popular? And why doesn't the union let DEP joining on the B747 or A330/A340. I can imagine that they are against DEP's on this fleet if there is a waiting list to go on to it. But according to your reply they are forcing people onto the A330/A340. Why not put DEP's onto this fleet and keep everybody happy. Or is there anything i am missing?

And finally say you join on the MD11 and you get your command with Germanwings, how long does it take you to get a longhaul command?
And how long does it roughly take if you wait for your command at LH Cargo?

Regards,

CEJM

Just checked LHs website for recruitment and noticed that they still specify age limits for employment. How do they justify this with the latest anti-age-discrimination law?

The german version of the anti-age discrimination law allows several exceptions, one of them being flight crew.
