What about those with an accident record?

A common requirement added to many job adverts nowadays is "No history of accidents" or "accident free record".
Many accidents that occur nowadays are not as a result of crew error, do these employers take this into consideration? If I were an employer i would be wary of employing a pliot with a history of accidents but as a pilot i feel concerned that if i were to have an accident that were not my fault (e.g., a/c design deficiency, improper maintainance) it would limit my future employment prospects. I understand that some companies may be forced to add the "accident-free" record due to insurance requirements.
