Major pilot recruitment at EK
Evening PPRUNE,
With 70+ orders from Emirates over the last few months got me thinking about future pilot recruitment, i mean with an average of four pilots per a/c this would amount to a staggering 280 pilots, all needing to be trained within the next 5 to 10 years.
This is one ambitious project to say the least, this is not taking in to account the pilots needed over at Qatar.
What do you guys think?

I think you need a calculater, that's what I think. 4 crews per A/C! Which Airline are you working for?
Try 8 minimum with all this ultra long haul. 8 per Aircraft means 8 Captains AND 8 F/O's. That's around 1100 with my sums.
And this is before people leave/retire. Ambitious indeed!
Just for the record, we are training over 200 pilots a year.

Could not agree more Globalwarming. However, there are those(in EK) who would remind you of the guy in your flying club who wore a flightsuit, gloves and rayban aviators while still on his solo X-country in a C150.

...and why do you think it should be minimum 4000 hours? How do you measure the quality of these flying hours? Plenty of airlines out there with no such requirements, and they're doin' just fine... And what is it about jet hours that is so "special"?

Active participation in events or activities, leading to the accumulation of knowledge or skill: a lesson taught by experience; The knowledge or skill so derived.

Yep, absolutely agree 100%. But how many have been laid off/ furloughed within the last 5 years. Again, probably a great deal more than EK.

What's with the hatred towards your fellow flyers? Havn't they warned you about 'generalizing' on your CRM course. There are the EK whingers on here but as you know, without unions to bleat to, PPRUNE is the outlet for their frustration. Most of us here are happy and I can assure you are not the T***S you make us out to be. At least I hope we're not............

XL5, Crossunder is somewhat right: I personally have covered recently few new joiner F/Os with a major gulf carrier, guys with different backgrounds.
Jet experience did not seem to be an issue, BUT, airline experience appeared to be quite a big one, just like medium or heavy jet performance understanding and usage. Adherence to SOPs, scan and checklist discipline etc
Guys with T-Prop time and airline experience seemed to cut it better adapting faster to a new jet airliner than guys with whatever operator background and light, business jet or even heavy military jet experience !
I believe airlines should be looking for airline experienced pilots first, if they want to have decent operators fast !
Again, exceptions exist, just to confirm the rule, as the french would say.
