India

Any info on 737 contracts in India? Have heard distant murmurs of discontent but nothing concrete. Considering a change of scenery.

I'm sure, as a british you'll find a 737 job in India. Air India Express, SpiceJet, Jet Airways are all expanding like hell with 737's, even more airlines in the pipeline.

One problem: Legally you cannot leave the airline without 6 month prior notice, which is quite a long time if you don't like it. State puts that law into place after lot of crews jumping on and off and negative effects on the customer side.

As far as I know, pay isn't very good, but will definitely have to increase within the next few years, regarding the pilot shortage they already have!

NB. Can't imagine myself living in India, it's a bit a difference, so think twice!

yep. lots of demand! hell lotsa demand. posting your resume at some websites will help mate.

Well staying in India is not all that bad. It can be fun! Specially for someone with UK (or so I assume). I know many people coming from UK over here and (atleast thats what they tell me) they enjoy here.

you sure i see only cows in swisszerland you got them in india too

you will feel at home surely

oh yeah may not be too clean as swiss i suppose you can always turn your nose up
jokes apart i know expats living in india they are well treated pay is ok and cost of living compared to the pay is pretty low you get experience save some money then you can always come back to the green countryside

I can not imagine that the six months applies to contractors who are employed outside India in the first place. The visas are not issued with this in mind either.

Any contractors care to comment?

My contract says 30 days notice. I think, but dont quote me on this, that the rules are aimed at the locals and mainly for the preservation of the national domestic airline I.A etc whose pilots leave for greener pastures like Jet and Sahara etc. Its amazing how a government body like DGCA can issue such rules and regs.
I for one support the notion that a pilot can work for whoever they want to and whenever. India is now a pilots market and the government is trying to choke it. Pity!

very true coco-nuts,
it will not stand a day in court how can a govt body decide when you can quit or not. Besides its only for new joiners, you really think current pilots will change their contracts Bull S...!

DGCA India has nothing better to do but make life hell for the local pilots.

Squawk, contractair is who im dealing with, they are on the pilotpointer web site. Log on to their site, register and if you have what they are looking for then they will contact you within hours. You will probabaly be contacted by Ian or Sam. Good luck, India is screaming for expat skippers! Pity they are not treating their own locals well though.

coco has nailed it....all you need is PIC type on 737NG or 320 and you are in. Request to be based in BOM, DEL, BLR no where else.

The pay in Jet Airways for a 737 Cpt. is 10.000$ + 5 star housing and transport.
Presently they need about 40 cpt. on 737 and 4-5 more planes to come.

Could you elaborate on what a 5 star housing is? Is it a house? How many bedrooms? With guards?

But more than two months after the DGCA order, no body has gone to court either against this "autocratic" law!

Angry DGCA ruling....

One wonders why the DGCA has'nt taken any "stern" action yet, too,against any "errring"pilots since the formation of this pseudo "rule".....!!! Take for example the 12 odd Sahara pilots who left AI express for Sahara.Wonder if they got reprimanded.Wonder how much DGCA took to clear THAT particular case.Or is it a case of a different yardstick for a different person.....! By the way......as a direct result of the so called exodus from AIE,at least one of their planes was grounded for over 4 weeks.Talk about causing inconvinience to passengers...!!Lol.Just a thought....

Simple - the rule was promulgated and no doubt influeneced as well AFTER the decision of the AIX pilots to reverse hop! And of course AIX loosing money due to the grounding also played a part! Have to give credit to the govt and AI management also, first putting IPG in their place and now this DGCA circular.


Well now things are in place finally - hopefully we will see an end to some of the mis-adventures!


Now the only thing the pax will have to worry about is the appropriation of AI aircraft to ferry politicians and their hangers on official visits! About time for a Public Interest Litigiation!

How is the DCGA's decision to change the retirement age to 65 going to affect the Ex-pat Captains? Has any airline in India hired any over 60s?

Who has the best schedule?

There is not a massive supply of over 60's indian captains so the effect is minimal.

I think all the airlines are taking then on/back.

Schedules are changing daily with the frantic expansion! but feel free to check their webisites...

Work is generally 6 on 1 off in accordance with FTL's. With max. 30 hours/7 days. (125 in 30)

Having worked for Sahara and lived over there for some time I can tell you its a big time culture shock but you are treated well. The biggest problem I had was not wanting to leave the hotel for a walk especially in BOM because its very disgusting outside (I mean no disrespect but I have Indian friends who definitley agree." Even though you can take a trip to the Taj, or go to elephant Island the fact is the hotel becomes your prison. I mean it really does. And you WILL work 6 days a week, at least at sahara. Just imagine eating the same food, seeing the same things every single day!! If you can stick it out it will be a good experience but if you can get something in Malaysia, or Khazhastan, etc please do yourself a favor and even if your making less it might be worth it!!

BOM is not the whole of India. I agree with what you say abt BOM, but then airlines are also offering other bases in India such as MAA,COK ,CCJ ,BLR,TRV etc where the natives are much friendlier and the environment more congenial! You dont have to escape to Kazhakastan or what not! And Tomcat, dont u think that being ableto walk in the street at 10PM without fear of being held up or mugged is something?
