The freight market might very well have have some overcapacity, which I seriously doubt. Eitherway, B744 freighter space is highly sought after and has certainly no overcapacity at all.
I believe, GSS will eventually be a BA franchise or even integrated entirely into BA with different pay scales, which is fair enough, as they have to compete with other freight operations, ie Lufthansa, Air France, Cathay, SinCargo, etc.
Above Airlines have a significant pure Freighter operation, which has been successful and BA will eventually do the same.
For the time being, they are still recovering from the failed freighter ops (1xB747 classic) a few years ago. They will eventually get over it and realize, that for the years to come, freight can generate higher profit margins than pax operation.
