Just a small point of order....What does the forum think of this wage paid to Security staff at Your local airports. £5.60 to £6.00 an hour...?
Myself i think its terrible.
Considering the importance of this job, the dangers involved ie explosives - weapons etc, unruly passengers etc, attending aircraft incidents, they work long 12 hour shifts, including Xmas and bank holidays.
They are tested daily on the X-Ray machines, a test they must pass on a regular basis or be dismissed. tested by the DFT yearly on security issues again they must pass it. not to mention the tests carried out on these security agents by the DFT who hang around the airports.
No other Secuirty business's do the same tests. your average shop security guard is on more money...? The cleaners and the burger bar staff at your airport are on MORE money. NO overtime rates are given NO night rate given and NO sick pay apart from SSP, The agents need a 10 year checkable work history, even before they get the job, also a CTC clearance by the goverment. Your average cocky watchman does not go through this but gets more money, the companys that employee these people are getting away with murder. All in all a poor wage for a serious stressful job. What do you think....?
I rest my case.

Looking around at some of our major airports, the security staff generally give the air of:
1. Being the folks that McDonald's rejected,
2. Not being particularly good at their jobs,
3. Not being bright enough to work anywhere else,
4. Not being bright enough to realise they could get more money working as a security guard in a shop, or as a cleaner.
£6 per hour? The airport owners are getting ripped off. I rest my case.
(Your grammar and punctuation are terrible by the way. Security Guard? I take it you is one?)

The guy is not asking for slagging off, he/she is only asking for an opinion on pay and conditions.
Anyhow, what does dontdoit mean? Perhaps someone who is jealous of others who are "doing it"? or you cant even grasp the fact on how to do it yourself?
There are allot of unfortunate, yet intelligent, well educated and well mannered people that work as security guards. Some maybe doing to it to fund their flying, some maybe doing it for just time being, some maybe doing it cos you cant do it yourself!

Seconded Murray; The BAA security staff so I am informed get about £17000 with shift and some o/t and I believe that Manchester Airport security used too be payed reasonably circa £12000. Having spent 10 years performing security audits round the world I can confirm that not all are rejects, as if you visit big M there is no one over 24 years anyway.
Security staff are poorly paid which is a measure of the importance that state and government attaches to the issue of airport security ditto the airlines. Once again it is merely superficial and it would be encouraging to see the likes of BALPA speaking up and bringing there force to bear in this issue. We view daily security complaints / fails on this web.
Finally the pilot / crew community and airport staff are the bigest moaners when things are done properly and spend a lot of time critising airport security. It is only important when it goes wrong.
Security Staff are underpayed and undervalued e.g. BA ramp staff can earn £20000 + easily and I can confirm that a number would not have the ability to work at big M.
