Usually that sort of information is contained in the LIMITATIONS section.

Not hard for a qualified Pilot trained on type to find...

Definitely NOT in the Limitations section of the FCOM! Reason, its not important to know!

It is not in the limitations section. Starter cycle is usually controlled by the autostart system. The autostart will only do two attempts for the GE and the RR will try three attempts.

Will check the MM next time I am at work.

Certainly is in my current A330 FCOM limitations section and it was in my old 777 FCOM limitations section as well.

Perhaps operator specific but I doubt it.

Apparently it was removed from the FCOM and QRH some years back; would make sense as if the auto start does not work then you have a maintenance issue requiring engineering support.

From the MM

GE90 5 min on, 10 min off, 5 min on. Then starter cooling for 10 min minimum.

RR 3 min on, N3 to 10%, 3 min on, N3 to 0, 1 min on ,N3 to 0, 30 min Off

Interestingly the MM calls them guidelines!

It's certainly in the A330 FCOM Limitations Power Plant section, I just checked.

I'll have to download the 777 FCOM and see.


Ok, seems you are correct, Boeing has removed the starter limitations in the 777 FCOM's.

They were the same as the A330 RR Trent limits which are still in the A330 FCOM:--

Two 3 min duty cycles and a consecutive 1 min cycle is permitted with run down to zero N3 between each cycle.

Starter maximum continuous operation is 5 min . ‐ Two 3 min duty cycles and a consecutive 1 min cycle is permitted with run down to zero N3 between each cycle.

After one continuous operation, or the three cycles wait 30 min to allow the starter to cool. ‐ No running engagement of the starter when the N3 is above 10 % on ground, or 30 % in flight.

What I never understood about starter limits was if you have a start problem and have the starter right at limits and call maintenance the first thing they do is try it again. They must have different limits than pilots.

I believe in the EPM it says you can try 457 attempts OR until the starter melts IF you are at an outstation AND you on your own. IF after the starter has melted, I think you may consult your company MCC for further support !
