The part in the Trent 1000 gearbox that exhibited corrosion is know as a crown gear, a form of a bevel gear. Apparently a processing change during gear manufacturing lead to this problem.

It appears now that GE engines are throwing out parts. Debris fell from an engine on a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner during a preflight test Saturday in South Carolina.

July 31: United Airlines is supposed to roll out their first 787 today. Hope it doesn't shed any engine parts.

This was correct, Lockheed Tristar was the best commercial airliner ever built ,it would have driven the DC-10 out of business but it had one achilles heel , Rolls Royce. Lockheed should have had an alternative engine.
it sold only 250 units, could have easily surpassed DC-10's 450 units.
