A320 Emer. Evac
 

Hi everyone !

Here goes a question for the Airbus techmasters...

I'm a former 737 pilot and back there we were supposed to retract the spoilers as part of the Emergency Evacuation NNC. Now I'm flying the bus and recently a colleague came up with a question:

Does any one know if there is any kind of spoiler retraction logic during an EMER. EVAC on the bus (RTO > 72kts or after landing)?

​​​Is there a logic behind it, or the spoilers simply retract because we shut off the hydraulics via the Fire pbs? Or is it something related to the loss of eletric power to the SECs? (As far as I've looked only SEC1 would be powered in a cenario where batteries are the only source of power / SEC2 lost 30s after eng shutdown).

I also guessed that... But I couldn't find a single photo of an a320/330 with slides deployed and spoilers extended. And, since this is not an item of the EMER EVAC procedure, it has to be because something else !

​​​​​But you're right, the overwing slide is clear of the inboard spoilers.

Spoilers tend to stay up even without hydraulic power on the ground. I have arrived on aircraft with spoilers up at the gate a couple of times (I guess the previous crew forgot about them and then also forgot doing the after landing checklist...) and they only retracted after applying hydraulic power to the systems.

Unfortunately, this thread has a picture of the spoiler relative to the exit.

Don't you think if it was a requirement Airbus would have mandated it in the evacuation procedure, forget about the 737 you are now flying a different aircraft.

There is a barrier on the emergency slide between the spoiler and the evacuating passengers.

​​​​​​I'm on your side and as long as I'm aware, there's no kind of auto retraction of the spoilers in this situation. At least I couldn't find any references so far.*

But..*

On the other hand, I still find very interesting the fact that we* dont't find photos/videos o the A320 with all spoilers extended in Emer. Evacs.*

In the photo posted above, there's only one outboard spoiler partially extended, I think. Why all spoilers aren't extended in that case?*

Ok... Just found more photos of 320/321 during evacs where the outboard spoilers are clearly extended.

So, now, the question is: why only the inboard spoilers retract?

Here comes an assumption...

During an Emer Evac, you will be left on batteries only, correct?

So, I checked the Elec Emer. Config Sys Remaining on the QRH, which says:

Taking a look at the FLT Controls Architeture, we find that spoilers 3 & 4 are controlled by SEC 1.

So, I'm assuming that when SECs 2 & 3 lose power, a retraction command is sent to the spoilers, but how can spoilers retract if the Hyd Fire Shutoff valves are closed (as the fire PB are out)?

Maybe they retract using some residual hyd pressure left in the system?
