A320's sometimes roll at selection on CONF 2

For Anybody Who Knows:

I have been flying the A320 for years and have many times experienced a slight, quick roll to the left at selection of CONF 2. I have also been told that it is a known issue and is addressed in the manuals. I cannot, however, find it anywhere. A free gold star to anybody that can enlighten me.

Thanks!

afaik it is kind of addressed in a note under FLAPS 2.......SELECT in FCOM-PRO-NOR-Approach-Aircraft Configuration Management-Intermediate/Final Approach

- When the speed brakes are deployed, extending the flaps beyond FLAPS 1 may induce a slight roll movement, and in calm conditions a small lateral control asymmetry may remain until disturbed by a control input or by an atmospheric disturbance.

Can't say I've noticed that. Have noticed a very pronounced ballooning tendency at Flap 2.

And there you have it! Your gold star is in the mail, along with the check.
Seriously though, I appreciate you finding that. It has been driving me crazy. I don't suppose you know whether or not it is a software issue?

Perhaps the flaps/slats extend slightly earlier or faster on the right hand side when CONFIG 2 is selected ?

Fursty Ferret 12th Jul 2015 09:05

It's obvious when it happens, only when speed brakes are extended during flap extension. It's abrupt and quite unpleasant and I try to avoid it at all costs.

I have absolutely no idea why it happens.

Be careful with the speed brake on the A320, pretty sure the 319/21 are different.

I saw this first hand with a new FO many years back, CONF2 and Full speed brake applied, then A/P disconnects and you are caught out.

Someone might be able to confirm, A319/A321 full speed brake applied with A/P is exactly that, full speed brake applied? In other words no nasty surprises if you disconnect like the A320?

A321 is also inhibited in Conf 3 and Full. Full speed brake is 25 degrees for
all 3 irrespective of Auto Pilot on or off.
Regard's,

No, it's not. You cannot extend full speed brakes on A320 with A/P on

kwaiyai 12th Jul 2015 20:58

That's right Cak A320 you can't, A321 you can.

sierra_mike 14th Jul 2015 21:05

speaking of deflection of the spoilers degreewise half speedbrakes on a 320 is the same as full speed brakes on the 319/321. though spoiler 2 is a bit special across the family :}

Metro man 14th Jul 2015 23:24

A319 will give you full speed brakes with the A/P engaged, however they only extend half as much as on the A320.

FGE319 15th Jul 2015 02:26

It was in the manual at my old EASA (but non-EU) carrier.

Wheels down, not yet flown an A321, but definitely the case between the A319 and A320 IME.
