Flap seal detached during take off

I was sitting in seat 20F on an A320 today, when a small seal (only a few cms diameter) detached during take off from the inner flap (it was the outboard of two such seals and next to a hook symbol.)

Presume this was some kind of self-adhesive cover for a flap lifting point? ….. there was what looked like a nylon insert with a hole (thread?) in the middle.

Would be interested to know if this seal has any purpose other than cosmetic.
