Decluttering scenarios on 737 MAX navigation display
The 737 MAX FCOM mentions an 'EXCESS DATA' warning that shows on the navigation display when there is too much data selected to be displayed at a time. For example, this applies when you attempt to select terrain and weather at the same time. However, I am not sure of when this message will occur in any other scenario. I imagine it would appear when too many waypoints/airports are available in the current view (the MAX navigation display has a maximum range of 640 nautical miles, so it does not sound impossible to me). However, I'm not sure of the specific number that will show the message, or of any other criteria that may apply. Does anyone have more information on this?

The Classic was the same…. And no, there were no specific numbers back then. Partly because exactly what constitutes “excess data” will vary wildly with what else is displayed - a complex routing with lots of airports around might have excess data if you select airports, a simple route might be okay till you select waypoints too. The Classic would often show it if you had a range in excess of 80 miles selected and asked for it to show waypoints, for example. No idea what the max considers “excess data”, but it’s a moot point anyway as I’d file “what exact combination of things may cause “excess data” to be displayed” to be so far down the list of minutiae as to be completely useless.

Compared to the NG, the Max can display a lot more symbols on the ND before you hit any limits, don't worry about it - when you reach the EXCESS DATA threshold you already probably are displaying more than you could ever make use of. Oh, and of course you can't display terrain and weather at the same time!

Very true.
Information overload.
Happens with aircrew too.
I have seen some folks, myself included, who asked for far too much info to be displayed and we end up with screens jammed with info.
When we went from steam gauges to all singing, all dancing, all showing screens it was as very easy error to fall into.
It leads to this expression.

Reminiscent of the 1201 - 1202…computer alarms that occurred during the Apollo 11 Mission first ever Lunar Module landing on the moon.
Google search “. Apollo11 computer alarms. “ for more info. You Tube has some interesting stuff.
