Development/background of Perf A/PANS OPS
Can any of the experts point me at any good articles/papers on the history of developing takeoff performance, obstacle clearance and performance criteria and why certain gradients/clearances were chosen?
Similarly on IAP design and PANS OPS criteria.

… and then there is a day when a golden nugget falls from the sky.

I wonder how the knowledge within this or the current document would influence modern pilots' perception of safety, the margins and assumptions in operations.

I see much value in introducing new chums to the wisdom gained from the blood shed in years long gone by. Unfortunately, not all folks agree with us.

John, that’s exactly what I was looking for - thank you. My day job involves working with the latest versions and sometimes explaining it to colleagues and I am a big believer in understanding the history and context behind designs and rule sets.

- When did the standard ILS or approach slope move from 2.5° to 3°? Was this driven by performance or obstacle issues?
- when did the standards go away from configuring from approach to landing flap when visual? I assume this was driven by increasing engine power and perhaps as discussed below the introduction of slats?
