Mandatory Altitude Crossing
Would anyone care to explain to me whether between waypoints EKVEG and SS04F, is this a level segment to be flown, or is waypoint EKVEG to be crossed 2500A and only mandatory to cross SS04F at 2500? I have checked the “INTRODUCTION TO JEPPESEN NAVIGATION CHARTS” booklet (Pg 81 Note -6) but it doesn’t seem clear (at least to me). Does anyone have another reference?
Kindly see the attached jpeg for reference. Thank you.

"MANDATORY" (note 6) is to be crossed only at 2500.
Number only with no text (note 4) is at or above (i.e., 2500A), which is EKVEG.
The altitudes apply to fixes, not the segments between them.

Look at page 6 in the APPROACH section
Look at page 6 in the APPROACH section
All altitudes depicted in the profile view are MINIMUM altitudes unless specifically labeled otherwise.
As mentioned it’s Mandatory, never found out officially when you have to be level by. We aim to be at that altitude at least 2 miles before to allow the Fms to do its stuff.
A query I have is why? Plenty of places I’ve been to with this Mandatory altitude , but when you look at the ILS for the same runway you don’t have to be level. So not an airspace restriction and surely the FMS is capable of completing the approach without having to level off.

I just checked the official chart of EGSS approach RNP Z R04 in the IAP, current Airac, here: https://www.aurora.nats.co.uk/htmlAI...ics/359022.pdf
It does NOT contain a restriction to be exactly at 2500' at the FAF, just like the ILS approach chart.
So, the restriction is Jeppesen's making, possibly because it's a 2D approach, as opposed to 3D ILS or LPV approaches.

On the arrival chart for 04 (AD 2.EGSS-7-17) there is a restriction to be at 2500 at 6.6D ISED which coincides with SS04F. It's not just jeppessen as the charts I use specify "at 2500" at the FAF/FAP on the ILS and RNP chart.
Well, in these days of CDFA style flying, you should have no level portion.. just quietly descending with idle power as you slowly configure to hit the 2500 mandatory point with all the bits hanging out. Keeps the treehuggers happy and beers on you if you cheat and must use speedbrakes
