B787 Shimming

Regarding the shimming problems between fuselage sections on the B787, I have not found a clear explanation of the shimming.
Are the two imperfect mating surfaces scanned and then individual shims made for each mechanical fastener, leaving possible gaps between the fasteners? If so, how is the pressure envelope maintained?

Or is one continuous annular shim made in order to mate the two surfaces perfectly?
