I sympathise, it was perfect for my crappy company phone and a little bottle of hand sanitiser. My personal phone has been to big to have fit in there for years and as illegal as it is, usually sits just behind the side storage on the little shelf by the vent. I judge my rotation aggressiveness by whether it has fallen into the side stowage or stayed in place.
Have you noticed it's been replaced by an official no smoking sticker on the window?

I did notice the new sticker! I guess that implies that smoking is permitted on the other planes! Out of curiosity, what kind of phone do you have, that won’t fit there?

On the matter of the pen, I'm not sure i could cope with anywhere but my right hand shirt pocket, it's resided there for years and to change that now would be far too confusing.
Ours are all usually found in one of the back cubbys below the rear CBs. I assume they should officially be on board as they're probably in a rediculous part of the MEL.

Iphone 11 Pro Max (it's bloody huge), it does fit in there portrait, but it doesnt stay in as too much weigh sticks out the back.

I keep my pen in the left pocket. And it’s mighty confusing if I’m not wearing my uniform shirt. Nowhere to put it, apart from the ashtray...

Hmm. Unusual. I’ve got the same phone. Never had an issue. It’s stayed put through some of my less finessed manoeuvres. Maybe the texture of the case I have gives a bit of grip.

If i'm working in civvies, the pen gets hooked onto my lanyard, but I still can never find it. Recently at my airline they have changed to require uniform at all sims, whilst many protested, it made the pen holstering easier. We can still wear civvies for delivery flights. An odd muddle of rules.
The pen holder is still there, but it becomes a mangled mess pretty quickly.

For me it would make WhatsApp video calls from the cockpit a lot easier, and for the cadets, their tick-tockery!
Also, I bet an iPhone is a more reliable satnav than the FMGC.

I don't think I've ever SLF'd without a uniform shirt under me cardi. Passport, buttoned down and pen in the left. That's okay, but on the sleeve. It's a bloody rightist society. I've still got a wool night-flight jumper with pen loop on left arm. Reaching for it with my left hand gets me some interested looks, but from the wrong gender.

If an item is missing in the MEL it can be either because it is required for the flight or it is not an airworthiness/safety related item. I guess the ashtray unfortunately falls in the second group.
