How much does a go around in an A380 cost the airline?
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone can give a rough guess as to what a go around costs an airline? Specifically for an a380, but if you know the costs for any other types that would also be appreciated, thanks.
Jet fuel costs about $650 per tonne.
A go-around, radar circuit and approach and landing will take about 15 mins, maybe longer.
Guestimates for fuel burn for 15mins:
A380: 3T costs $1950
747: 2.5T costs $1625
787: 1.3T costs $845
737: 0.7T costs $455
Of course, you would have to add the extra cost of 15mins of flight time (maintenance, crew, etc) as well as any extra approach fees and the costs of any delay caused by the go-around.

So yes, I can see a pilot or two worrying about that.

I flew with a captain that is a beancounter wannabe and didn't want me to use datalink to get wx reports because "it's very expensive for the company". Sure, better get off the radios and create a potential for loss of communication if you stuff up the transfer of radios at some point...

- The airline is based on the hub model
- The flight is supposed to land at the hub airport
- There are many passengers on board that can miss a connection
Ballpark figure is that 20 mins can cause 10 k$ loss. It can vary a huge lot of course, it's just a guestimate based on figure I saw at my airline's tool for managing delays.
A380 full of connection pax, and if the following flights cannot wait to depart (because of curfew for example), and if the hotels are all booked, it will be much much larger than a flight with local pax or pax with connecting flights that can wait.

It is considered one of the most important and dangerous movements. It is not related to financial costs, but to air safety first than the question is how much does it cost if not ???????
Any well known business will have contingency built into their budget (their costing model) for such occurrences.
When they become necessary, provided the budgeting was realistic, then they cost nothing above that which was anticipated.
If per chance they do not occur then the company, airline or otherwise, gets to reap a bonus.

This will include many items not required for a go around but go around's will be a contingency cost.
So if the go around takes 20 minutes it "roughly" costs the airline $10,000.
