Interesting 787 Airworthiness Directive

Software issues....

This AD is effective March 22, 2019.

We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all The Boeing Company Model 787 series airplanes. This AD was prompted by a report of an uncommanded descent and turn that occurred after an inflight switch to the spare flight management function (FMF). This AD requires an inspection of the flight management system (FMS) to determine if certain operational program software (OPS) is installed and installation of new FMS OPS and a software check if necessary. For certain airplanes, this AD also requires concurrent actions. We are issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

I’m more concerned about the fact that the engine fire switch might not work. Will try to remember the advice on the fcom bulletin....land at the nearest suitable airport.

GE too. The problem seems to be the rotating fire engine switch... happy not to fly that kind of Boeing

Quote " a report of an uncommanded descent and turn that occurred after an inflight switch to the spare flight management function (FMF)."

... and the pilots just did ye olde "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate thing" so nothing untoward happened and no headlines were made.

For that part of society that happily awaits the future of airliners without pilots, it was a bleak day.

The fire switch issue is independent of engine type.

yes, but they lost 4000 feet during the adventure...plenty of places where that would not be a good thing?

uncommanded functions by the FMS are a bit more than the ANC thing.

No, everything was picked up within some 200 ft and max 20 degrees of heading change.

As you say, with the Fire Switch bulletin still current..the descend and turn manoeuvre may be highly appropriate!!!
