Inmarsat - Iridium

On enroute charts you can see an Inmarsat number for contact to ATC (see below exampel for CANARIAS ACC Inmarsat no 424201)

How do you contact these Inmarsat numbers from an Iridium Satphone ?

Inmarsat has a country code of 00870 or +870
So if your Iridium can call for example a German number by prefacing it with 0049 you should be able to call an Inmarsat number in the same way.

Calls from the terrestrial telephone network (PSTN) to an Inmarsat network are made using the Inmarsat +870 international dialling code.

Example 4 – Originating a call from an Iridium satellite phone (does not matter where the satellite phone is located) to a landline phone located in another country.

From the satellite phone, dial: 00 CC XXXXXX

00, for all outbound calls from satellite phone/CC, country code/XXXXXX, actual number.

So i don't see why you shouldn't reach the Canaries under the phone number 00 870 424 201 using an Iridium sat phone or really just any other phone.
(But it might be a special number only reachable from within the Inmarsat network, which would be kinda stupid)

Those are INMARSAT short codes

6 digit short codes are for INMARSAT based SATCOM systems. Check to see if your manual offers an equivalent direct dial number.

They are on the AIP. all " normal" ATC tel numbers are available on the Country AIP , easy to collect them and add in manuals. They also used to be on the back of en route paper charts in my days . But in today paperless world, not sure where they are, and if they are still there. .

So just to make make sure we got this correct. The country code of Spain is +34, which I have gotten from the International Dialing Procedures page in the Jepp.
We would dial 00 34 424201 ?? is this correct??

No, that wouldn't work. Inmarsat short codes can only be called from an Inmarsat device, you need the regular phone number to call from an Iridium, Globalstar or any old regular telephone unfortunately...

you have to sign up for inmarsat. The system is originally meant for the shipping industry. I might be wrong what todays status is, but check you AIP.

Ah SATVOICE, the Emperor’s not so new clothes. I totally get why it might be liked by folks in the flight deck, but my God is it inefficient and unreliable for us on the ground.

Best place to get numbers as mentioned is in AIP or regional equivalent of NAT DOCs. We occasionally have iridium users who obviously just Google the number for our center. Thus they get through to reception and need to be transferred into Operations on a handset…..somewhere in the room nowhere near the controller they need to talk to.
