MLS Distance from runway query

Hi all,

Quick question, I understand how the Microwave Landing System works in informing the pilot of the aircraft's x and y axis position, however how does it inform the pilot of how far it is from the runway?

precision DME, like ordinary DME but more accurate.

PS MLS is withdrawn in the US and the last European installation I'm aware of at LHR was withdrawn last year.
