B787 CVR

Morning all,

Is anyone able to confirm the looped duration or length or recording of the Dreamliner CVR?
I have heard mixed reports ranging from 6 hours to 24 hour but can't find anything written down to confirm either way.

Or 2 hours on earlier airframes, possibly depends on the vendor ?

Why would there be any market for a 50 hour CVR when the latest mandate would require only 25 hours?

25 hours seems to be maximum offered by Honeywell. - https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/e...ight-recorders

Also 25 hours voice for L3/Harris - https://www.l3harris.com/sites/defau..._Sept_2022.pdf

Just a guess. But that might be the 'sweet spot' for flash memory price/performance. Memory manufacturers have no reason to serve the relatively tiny CVR market and stick to building the maximum size devices the market and technology will support.

Some CVR manufacturers might limit the capacity to match the spec in their firmware (to match the regulatory requirements). Others might just put in the current standard sized memory and let the customer use it all.

In addition, while these are most likely 'Commercial Off The Shelf' (COTS) components, they are specially qualified for the application - in this case high temp and high 'G' impacts - which isn't cheap.
So when the vendor finds a component that 'works', they are reluctant to use something else.

Well, this need not be be abstract. Please point me to a 50 hour CVR. The fact that I didn't find one doesn't mean I said there isn't one.

Would anyone know the general location of the forward (combined) FDR and CVR on a typical 787-8. I can see what looks like the aft (?) recorder in a photo of the aft pressure bulkhead.

Data Recorder Location (787)

Someone suggested the forward recorder was close to the aft recorder, but perhaps they are confusing the RIPS (backup power supply for the recorder). Unfortunately, I've retired, so I can't check the AMM or SSMs.
Strangely, the one in the photo looks like it's mounted upside down.

Thanks!

I recall reading somewhere that the forward EAFR is under the flight deck.

It's in the crown area, above the ceiling.

One is located in the crown of section 41, just aft of the flight deck and the other in the crown of section 47, above the aft galley.

It's so nice to be overwhelmed with information on the subject. Thanks gentlemen.

I always looked forward to crash investigation reports, as morbid as that sounds, as they often filled in the gaps in my systems knowledge. i.e. providing details not even found in Maintenance Manuals, Wiring Schematics or FCOMs .

Cheers

P.S. I'm assuming the -9 is the same as the -8

Just out of curiosity, if I might.

How does the ("normal") readout of this modern EAFR work ? Simply read the "raw" memory modules ? Some interface / protocol involved ?

I think it's been implied/stated that it's little more than plugging a laptop into the front with an ethernet adapter.

Found this image on YouTube for the forward recorder... showing the Forward EAFR mounted on the fuselage above door L1.

Forward EAFR above Door L1
Forward EAFR above Door L1
Identified by the ULB mounted on it.

I read somewhere that the Aft EAFR is at Station 1847. Would anyone know what the station number of the tip of the nose is? AMM Chapter 6 anyone?

Thanks.
