Whilst I know that the final approach segment on a non-precision approach begins at the FAF and on a precision approach at the FAP is the FAF depicted on an ILS plate purely there for the G/S out approach or is it still valid for the full ILS?

If you mean the Maltese Cross, that is ONLY for the non-precision approach.

That's curious. I always thought that the FAP, which shares the so-called "Maltese Cross" symbol with the FAF, indicated the start of the precision segment. Live and learn huh?

The Maltese Cross is the final approach fix on a non presision app. The FAF on a presision app is where the GS meets the Platform.
This detailed in Jep text manual and PANS OP
