WX RADAR. Honeywell RDR4B vs RDR4000
Simple question.
I fly 737NG and older a/c are fitted with The honeywell rdr4B, which has the off button to be kept off.
The new aircraft are fitted with the RDR4000 which has no off button , is always on scanning for creating a memory of the wx activity even if is not displayed.
Is that legal?
To be honest i don't really like this thing.
On th rdr4b honeywell manual it says that the flightdeck is exposed to a quantity of radiation which anyway is "below" the "legal" concetration.
Does make wx radar on or off any difference to our body or not????

If you want it off, just put it in "TEST" mode and turn off WX display on your ND.
A 737NG mechanic once told me that even if the wx radar panel is turned on, it won't actually start to scan until one of the pilots has turned on WX display on his ND...
According to some guys in my company who actually did a test in actual flights using a radiation detector, the increase in radiation in cockpit when you have the radar on is not very significant.
Correct me if I'm wrong!
