737NG OEI Landing Checklist - Additional GA Thrust Required
Framer, you have a lot of funny ideas.
What you say is right of course. In my defence I was imagining a damaged engine with smoke filling up half of the bleed ducting. As you rightly pointed out that is not necessarily the case with a fire warning. If fuel or hydraulic fluid is leaking onto the casings, or a bird has built a nest or whatever, then there is no path.
I have been lead to believe ( but can't back up with references) that fire indications are often due to a breach of some sort and that was my mindset at time of writing, ie rotating parts letting loose and bursting pipes, combustion chamber ruptures or cracks, or accessory gearbox failures. I understand that this will most likely be classified as severe damage in the wash up but the reality is that the fire light will get the highest priority as it unfolds and the crew will be thinking in terms of " we have a fire".
Anyway, in my mind it was a slightly more damaged engine we were shutting down, I didn't convey that properly so I'll put an edit note under my previous post so that I don't lead anyone astray. You'd think after fixing the things for five years in a previous life I would have relayed my thoughts better......but no
