Tracking the 787
This is pretty amazing.
According to this article, Boeing is tracking virtually every system on every 787 in flight, real time.
Then as the article details, both United tracks aircraft real time, and GE tracks it engines in flight.
"Each plane is sending up to 5,000 indications about itself at any time, including the oil level in the Auxiliary Power Unit, the status of the heater that keeps the pilot's cockpit windows free of ice and the health of the recently modified lithium-ion batteries. If needed, the team can call up over 140,000 sources of data on each jet."
What system of broadcast medium would they be using for that level of detail? The bandwidth use must be horrendous, so its not ACARS.
